I have traced my Gilpin ancestry to Whitehaven, where I have my William b c 1733/4 (don't know where), who was a Weaver. In 1762 he was living in Charles Street in a house owned by yet another William Gilpin, and I know that at some stage, the William Gilpin who owned the property had to sell it, as per The Cumberland Paquet.
I have checked out several William Gilpins, there are loads of them, but have come unstuck each time.
I think that he married twice- once in 1755 to Isabel Burton, they had two children and in 1765 Isabel died following child birth, their son died a couple of weeks later. In 1767 he married Grace Brown by licence. He stood as guarantor himself, so he must have been able to afford the £200 required. At the time of this marriage he was 33. He continued to live in Charles Street until his death in 1785. His death was mentioned in the Newspaper at the time. Has anyone out there any idea which branch of the many Gilpin branches he could be from. My eyes are spinning from looking through Parish registers in Whitehaven. If you can help I would be grateful.
