Parents Name Buddeg and James William, surname HOPKINS. Buddeg died in childbirth (nee Jenkins). My father Rees was adopted by the family friends - Matthews. He had other siblings. I understand as his (Rees) daughter I am very much like my grandmother to look at. I do not know my lost family. Please get in touch if you think you can help me find them. Thank you. Sandra

Only one problem here, Sandra -- and it is not your fault.
When you wrote your post, there was a line with the surname at the top. Your post then got published on the board for that surname.
It also got published on the general Trying to Find board. If you see "remove this filter" on the left of your monitor when you click on Trying to Find, click on that. You will see what the general board looks like.
99.99% of the people reading your post -- meaning everyone who is unrelated but could possibly help you with searches (read a few of the threads on the TTF board) -- have no idea what your people's surname is. And there is no way in the world of tracking your post back to the surname board it started on. Clever, hm?
Just click "Edit" in the corner of your post and add the surname to the subject line.

But ... that's one unusual given name you have there!
Marriages Dec 1913 Hopkins James W Jenkins Bridgend 11a 1699 Jenkins Buddeg Hopkins Bridgend 11a 1699
James Hopkins married Buddeg Jenkins.
Searched at http://www.freebmd.org.uk
for the marriage of a James and a Buddeg.
(Tuesday) --- Sandra: I had already written these two posts when you posted your counterpart question yesterday. Too bad you weren't watching for replies! I do hope you see this information and the private messages I have sent you.

Next, searching for births with surname Hopkins and mother Jenkins ...
There are of course too many.
Mother's surname was only included in the index after mid-1911.
So if you do that search, for
births surname Hopkins mother's surname Jenkins 1914 to 1923 (when she died)
you can see which births might be your family.
Deaths Jun 1923 HOPKINS Buddeg 32 Bridgend 11a 813
Since they were married and she died in Bridgend registration district, that is probably where the births will be.
|
Here you go. These are all the Hopkins-Jenkins births in Bridgend 1913-1923.
Births Jun 1915 Hopkins Violet Jenkins Bridgend 11a 1847
Births Sep 1916 Hopkins Cordelia Jenkins Bridgend 11a 1628
Births Mar 1918 Hopkins Cyril Jenkins Bridgend 11a 1600

Unfortunately, marriages after the early 1920s are still being transcribed by FreeBMD, so you are not likely going to find the children's marriages with the search engine.
The digitized images of the GRO index have to be downloaded at a site like Ancestry -- the page on which a marriage would appear for that name for each quarrter of each year when the person might have married.
You can start at this site by clicking on "Search Trees" up top and seeing whether anyone here has any of those people in his or her tree. Allow a couple of years either side of the birthdate in case family members aren't certain of it.

Sometimes searching turns up sad news too quickly.
The index of deaths between 1984 and 2005 can be searched on line at Ancestry, and date of birth can be used for that search. I just looked for a death to match your James J J (John) Hopkins. You may know this already, I couldn't tell, but he unfortunately died in 1997.
Name: James John J Hopkins Birth Date: 29 Apr 1923 Death Registration Month/Year: Jan 1997 Age at death (estimated): 73 Registration district: Bridgend Inferred County: Glamorgan Register number: 98A District and Subdistrict: 8611A Entry Number: 18
If you are not in touch with his family, that death certificate might give an address or family member's name that could help. If not, with the exact date and place of his death, you might find a death notice in a local newspaper at the public library that would name children and grandchildren.
|
If you were to get the other children's birth certificates, you would have dates of birth that could be used to search the 1984-2005 deaths index -- even without a married surname for the daughters, a match might be found (or a death during that time ruled out).
You can order certificates here, with the registration details in the posts above:

Next stop is www.192.com to look for living people.
I have found some information there on a Cyril Hopkins that I will send to you by private message.

Yoo hoo, over here, Sandra, lol.
Sandra's PM:
Evie you are a star!!. I am just too new to this at the moment, I had only started the other day and not getting the hang just yet. The only scrap of info I had was that I found my Grandmother and Grandfathers marriage date just before I posted my 'thread' (is that what you call it?) Thank you so very much and I do believe the children you found for Jenkins/Hopkins are amazing - it would have taken me a wee while to find those myself. I have a very old letter written to my mother signed Vi. address in Bridgend dated 1976 just after my father died, so it looks good. I just do not know how to set about finding my grandparents parents. Would buying their marriage cert be the best bet?
(Keeping it in the thread (a) keeps all the info together; (b) doesn't confuse me when I try to figure out what PMs are about -- I only sent some of that stuff by PM because it was about living people, btw; and (c) shows everyone else that you're a lovely person who responds promptly to assistance offered, and not one of those jerks who never comes back to say "oh", let alone "thanks"!)
So -- yes, buying the marriage cert will get you their ages and fathers' names.
Their birth certs will then give you their mothers' names too, but the birth for Hopkins in particular might be hard to identify without at least a rough DOB from the marriage cert.
When I did a general search for given name Buddeg, nothing turned up for her birth. However ... and yes, you can do this! ... go to FreeBMD and search for a birth
surname Jenkins given name Bud*
You will find it, misspelt or mistranscribed as slightly different. Actually, there are two others, so it seems to be a variant spelling.
I'll assume you don't have a subscription to search censuses for now, but you'll be wanting one. Thank goodness for unusual names. 1901:
Name: Buddug Jenkins Age in 1901: 9 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1892 Relation: Daughter Father's Name: Rhys Mother's Name: Ann Where born: S Wales, Maesteg Civil Parish: Llangynwyd Ecclesiastical parish: Llangynwyd St Cynwyd Town: Maesteg County/Island: Glamorgan Country: Wales
Ann Jenkins 48 - born S Wales, Pembroke Rhys Jenkins 58 - born S Wales, Bridgend; shoemaker, own account Adwen Jenkins 16 - coalscreener Berwyn Jenkins 17 - coalscreener Brannus Jenkins 25 - coalminer Buddug Jenkins 9 Uram Jenkins 7
Now you can play at FreeBMD and look for a James William Hopkins birth that might match up with Buddeg, and look for Buddeg's parents' marriage ... and her siblings' marriages (you have some fine names to help with that) ...
You can search the 1881 census at Ancestry free (you can search all other censuses too, you just can't look at the details), so you can look at the earlier household, but unfortunately they were married by then (son 25 in 1901) so it won't be them with their parents:
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/census/uk/default.aspx
and you will get a feel for the site. You can also get a 14-day free trial subscription to try it out.
Report back with results, for any further help!
