Flippin 'eck girl.

Hilda Baker was an old time comedienne who had a sidekick called Cynthia [man dressed as woman]. Hilda also played a character called Nellie Pledge in a sitcom....Nearest and Dearest.

Michael was wondering if Hilda's catchphrase was 'Evening each'. I think he was thinking of the very old tv series Dixon of Dock Green where Jack Warner came in, said "Evening all" and saluted.

I just asked if he was taking the mickey [short for Michael] out of me because my name is Cynthia.

Geddit???

You know when you are old if, when going up stairs, you stop and say "am I on my way up.... or down?"

It was our 31st wedding anniversery today
well yesterday.since it is after midnight.
We both had to work a late night clinic and most of our patients did not arrive.
I hate days like that.
Now my chance to chill.

Good morning all,

Panic over folks - I've 'cracked it'

I remember Dixon of Dock Green and 'Evening all' but I could 'hear' the 'Evening each' in a female Birmingham? Accent.

Well it was Beryl Reid - found this:

"YOU could tell it was Beryl Reid the moment she opened her mouth. Out would come those rounded Brummie vowels that instantly announced her much-loved character Marlene, the bop-happy Black Country teenager with the huge, dangling earrings.

Born in Hereford of Scottish parents, Beryl set her sights on a stage career as early as the age of four.

It took her to the early 1950s to make the breakthrough, introducing Marlene and her catchphrase "Good evening each" to fans of Educating Archie, a popular radio show starring ventriloquist Peter Brough and his dummy Archie Andrews."

(EEEh - that Archie was 'a one' - wasn't he ???) - It was more effective when you later saw him on 'telly' - How could anyone have got away with a ventriloquist and his dummy on radio ???

Ahh - bring back the 'Olden Days'

I remember Archie Andrews and Peter Brough!!! Used to listen to them on the radio and I just loved Saturday Night Theatre - much more exciting than the telly on a Saturday night nowadays!!

Can't believe Ginny has never heard of Dixon of Dock Green though.....I think she's pretending meself!!

Happy belated anniversary LK - what a shame about your frustrating day though.........have a day off to make up for it!

Housework, out to lunch and then off to the local library to do some research on a friends family. There is a surprise This is your Life party for him and I offered to do his father's family as a bit of fun. Going to try and do what I can myself but will ask for help when I get stuck. I don't get the chance to rummage around archives with my own family because I live too far away so am looking forward to doing something locally.

Stand by though........I know my limitations!!

FannyByGaslight Report 23 Jul 2010 16:57

Yey hey..
Yes you did Gins.

Dixon of Dock Green.

Jack Warner.

Mother and I are still searching for the photo of him and my Paternal grandfather sat on a log together in the farmyard of Grandads farm in Surrey.

They was mates...

I says me aunt nicked it one day.
She has a tin of photos that she wont let us look at.

Loads of my father as a child and my grandparents when young so mother says she told her.

I have told her I will give her the originals back if she will let me have a few to copy, but nope,no will do.

Grandad told me once while we were painting his kitchen that she had loads of stuff out the back door when nan wasnt looking.

Was even painting back when too werent I...

Used to paint the outside of the house for them every 2 yrs .
That paid my keep for the 2 weeks holiday with them.

My nan wouldnt give you the drippings off the end of her nose or the rind off the cheese if she could help it mother said.

But I did get lots of love and cuddles from them for free.

Gee

Gee Report 23 Jul 2010 17:41

Early this morning about 5am I scared the pants off my family!

I was dreaming that I was being attacked and shouted HELP....

Well, it woke them all up and I sounded like I was being murdered according to them

I have also put off No 2 sons mate from sleeping over by all accounts...good oh!

Michael.......Arthur Askey!! Another Scouser and his cousin Georgina used to live near my OH. I know someone who looks just like him.............

Oh what a glorious thing to be.....a grown up, healthy, busy busy bee.....whiling away all the passing hours, pinching all the pollen from the cauliflowers.........tra la

Had a good time at the archives and got a copy of my friends grandad's marriage cert so it's all systems go for me tonight. Met a chap with AS who was obviously having a few probs - made me feel very sad for him. What an unhappy life he is living.

Girl in the library said she recognised me and that although it was from many moons ago, I hadn't aged a bit!!! 'Spose I should be flattered really. My grandson laughs at me because he reckons I know someone wherever I go.

Must go and make some custard for OH. Back later.
