I've contacted him/her Alexandra. Just waiting for a reply. Like I said, might be away on holiday. Some, sadly, never reply. Though I've usually struck lucky.

No Alexandra, it isn't your Grace. I thought it might be at first.

I haven't found your Grace in 1911 or earlier. I didn't try hard, cos although she married James Pickett she isn't the mother of any of his children.

Madmeg Report 28 Jul 2010 22:16

This presumably is the family you think have your James:

1861 England Census
about James Pickett
Name: James Pickett
Age: 48
Estimated birth year: abt 1813
Relation: Head
Spouse's name: Sarah
Gender: Male
Where born: Greenwich, Kent, England

Civil parish: Southwark St George The Martyr
County/Island: Surrey
Country: England

Street Address:

Occupation:

Condition as to marriage: View image

Registration district: St George Southwark
Sub-registration district: Borough Road
ED, institution, or vessel: 14
Neighbors: View others on page
Household schedule number: 91
Household Members: Name Age
James Pickett 48
Sarah Pickett 43
James Pickett 24
Mary Ann Pickett 17
Jane Pickett 15

The person with the tree on Ancestry has actual dates for many of these Picketts, so perhaps she has the certificates. But it is also likely that someone else has passed her the information, and it may be innacurate.

To be absolutely sure you would need sight of birth and/or marriage certificates to prove that this is your family.

G83 Report 28 Jul 2010 19:20

thank you meg for all your advice i shall indeed be looking into all that advice tonight im very grateful to you for your help :)....

Re the browning side i have gone back to 1803, i found that side more easier, except when i got back to 1803 i hit a stumbling block i managed to find George 1803 born St Saviour southwark and i believe he married mary dorrington, i dont know of her birth year or any marriage info and i only found the 1 son which is George 1839.... im pretty sure there would be more but i cant find this infomation.... without ancestry its hard.... George 1803 was my grandmothers great grandfather, so thats how far ive got, would like to confirm his information wife and marriage, and other siblings as im pretty confident there would of been more aside the 1 son...as mentioned above....

:) thank you :)

Hi Alexandra

The Register Office, 34 Peckham Road, London, SE5 8QA.
Tel: 020 7525 7651. Fax: 020 7525 7652.
E-mail: [email protected]

Ring or send them an email to say you are looking for a birth of Dorothy Browning with mother Kate Pickett, between 1924 and 1931 (If you think that's about right). You will have to be prepared to pay for it if they find it. If they can't find it, you could ask if their records enable them to search on a different surname, but it's unlikely that they will.

Re the grave of Grace. By the late 1960s most people were buried at municipal cemeteries, so Southwark Council should have records, which might tell you if there is or ever was a headstone. They might be able to tell you who bought the grave and who else is buried in it. Some councils charge for this service, some don't if you are only looking for one or two graves. If she was cremated, she may or may not have been buried.

If nothing is turned up by the Council, you'd have to start looking at local churches. Google "Churches Southwark" and look if they have churchyards, as some don't. You could then email, phone or write to them asking if she is buried there, was there a headstone, and who else was buried there. Most churches wouldn't charge (I usually send a small donation if they are helpful), but some keep poor records, or have passed them on to the local archives. Some may have records but just don't have the time to look for you, unless you were planning on using the grave again.

I'll have a look at the Picketts, but you seem to have done quite well on that.

Have you done any work on the Browning line?

Margaret

Hello meg,

Im very pleased to accept the information as it fits i also would be interested in seeing Grace's burial to see if anything is on there like you said i dont know how i would find this out?

I would aslo like to contact the registrar to enquire about my nan if you could advise me further on that.

The reason i started this line was to show and tell my nan where she come from if you understand and im very pleased with what i have achieved thanks to the GR community so far.

I would like to go back further in the pickett line, I know James 1864-1944 was son to James 1841 and Ann Taylor (i believe) and aside James 1864 they had Harry, William, John, Anne, Martha, Emma and Grace.

I believe James 1841 was son to James 1813 and sarah (unknown) aside James 1841 they had Mary and Jane.

This is all i have i would like to confirm the above possibly find out the Sarah's maiden name maybe go back further so i can show my nan an excellent line of her family history....

I hope you can help x

Hi Alexandra

What do you want us to try and find for you now?

The two boys James (Jack) and William James are only your grandma's cousins, so I wouldn't suggest spending money on their certificates unless you want confirmation of what we on here have sort of deduced.

I did suggest trying to find a headstone in a cemetery for Grace Dorothy Minnie Pickett, just to see if it mentioned anything about a husband or child.

I believe that the two boys' mother was Annie Edith Cunningham, so if you are happy to take that no further, and accept it, I think that is reasonable. The fact that they are on this family tree (can you not ask the person who drew it up?) indicates they were part of the family, whoever their true parents were.

Like you, I am mystified as to why your grandmother Dorothy's birth is not registered. It does seem odd, when her siblings were all registered. You could ask the local registry office if they will look for a Dorothy Browining for you, between 1924 and 1931. Some local registry offices can be very helpful.

So leaving all that aside, back to the Pickett family, of James born 1856, and George Browning.

What do you want to know?

ah i see thank you for the summery was very much easy to read and understand and im grateful for all your hard efforts.... i would be lost without your help and kindness... if you find anything further please let me know im glad of any info on this family x

I did think of doing a quick summary, perhaps a good idea:

James Pickett 1856 married Ann Banks.
Children Jane, Thomas, James 1901, John (died young?), Frederick, Kate, Ann Rosina, Alfred, Arthur (died young).

James Pickett 1901 married Grace Dorothy Minnie Hill in 1920, she was previously married to James Williams in 1911. No evidence of any children between Grace and James Williams. No evidence of any children between Grace and James Pickett.

Annie Edith Cunningham, b1903 Edmonton, married Ernest H Hanwell in 1923. Ernest possibly died in 1932. Annie Edith was the daughter of George and Edith, both born 1880. Her siblings were Ethel, Robert Henry W, Harold Richard and Ruth Emily. No tracing done of them yet.

Two children born to Annie Hanwell, nee Cunningham:

1928 James (Jack) Hanwell also registered as Pickett.
1929 Un-named Hanwell, we believe could be William James.

Assumption that the 1928 baby is the son of James Pickett as it was registered also in his name.
No idea about the father of the 1929 baby. It may say Ernest Hanwell is the father, but he possibly isn't.

Grace Dorothy Minnie died a Pickett.
No second marriage or death in the London are for Annie.

This one possible:

England & Wales, Death Index: 1916-2005
about Annie Hanwell
Name: Annie Hanwell
Birth Date: 20 May 1903
Death Registration Month/Year: 1975
Registration district: Leeds
Inferred County: West Yorkshire
Volume: 5
Page: 0258

No known connection with Leeds.

A tree on Ancestry has James Williams marrying Dorothy Grace Hill. Plus a baptism and parents John and Sarah. But not much more.

With three names to go at, she could have been any combination.

I can't see any children in Southwark, for James and Grace. There's one in Dec 1920 but by then she was married to James Pickett.

ChristineinPortugal

ChristineinPortugal Report 27 Jul 2010 13:20

Well found Meg, so she was Grace Dorothy Minnie Hill.

When I posted that the actual marriage wasn't on Ancestry, I meant on the London Records where I found the baptisms and the Banns.
