1841 for Mary Kelly definitely show not born in county. So, the births Mel found are probably not her.

Her death should have been registered though.

Ok since you have had such great success with this lot, can I stretch the request to John Ebenezer's brothers please? :-D

They were:
William Charles KELLY b. 1843 Shaldon, Devon
and
Thomas KELLY b. 1845 Shaldon, Devon

Both sons of the Reverend Wm and his 2nd wife Elizabeth (nee KRAUSHAAR)

I have had no luck finding them in 1881.

Thank you!
:-)

Wondering about those two births on FreeBMD...the numbers are so similar I wonder if they are the same birth and it is a transcriber discrepancy...?

Cherilyn Report 7 Jul 2011 13:39

Hey Mel, I saw that one in Iddlesleigh, but then there was about about half dozen in the same place with same parents so I discounted it. But being such a religious family it seems unlikely that they would not have christened her. Grr!

Still, musn't grumble, it has all fitted together so wonderfully, I had given up getting further back and now have lots to go on with :-) thanks to all the lovely GR helpers!

The 1841 Census for England was taken on the night of 6 June 1841. Mary Kelly (Hally) was about 3 months old then. So the birth should be Jan Feb Mar 1841. It was'nt compulsary to register a birth until 1875 when you were fined for not registering.

There is Lake Methosist Chapel at Shebbear College.

The marriage that Chris put up says Charles Kelly father of the said minor.

I can't find a birth, christening or death for Mary F KELLY c1840-1! :-(

(I expected it to be in Cambridgeshire?)

Cherilyn

Cherilyn Report 7 Jul 2011 12:49

Just found this - a good fit, especially the Methodist and Shebbear connections!

...as a 'Bible woman' which almost certainly meant that she was able to preach on the Bible and belonged to a sect called the 'Bible Christians'. They were a breakaway group from the Methodists who allowed and encouraged preaching by women, unheard of then in the mainstream churches ... Shebbear was an important base in Devon... The Bible Christians settled their differences and rejoined the Methodists early in the 20th century.

By the by, looking at the christening for Wm KELLY in 1806 to Chas & Hannah, I found another at St Luke Old Street, Finsbury to same parents -
Hannah Matilda KELLY! b. 26 April 1810, chr. 20 May 1810.

But can't find her after that. Anyone??? Please ;-)

I need to go to the library on Saturday so might take advantage of the free Anc access they have...not sure how much more it will tell me tho!

Cherilyn Report 7 Jul 2011 12:41

Oh good work, Potty! I had found that birth this afternoon and it had me concerned we had the wrong family.

Though Matilda does look like a good match - especially with her being a 'Bible woman' - whatever that is!

I was quite surprised to see Chas' occupation as stockbroker - surely that didn't that have the same meaning in the early 1800s as it does today?!

Chris - that piece about Wm certainly puts him in Old Gravel Lane at the time of Matilda & Wm Hy's births there. Though he did not stay there until 1858...

Mel - that's fantastic! They had some sort of celebration a couple of years ago and invited my mother as a descendant but of course she could not afford the airfare. The web site does not have as much history as it used to :( so I'd love to know more. There was someone at the College office who sent me a copy of a page from an old book that mentioned Wm in his time as headmaster there, which was lovely, and a photo of a plaque.

Well done Chris, so it looks as if we have the right baptism for Matilda. There is another Kelly child baptised at the same church. He doesn't appear on the 1841, so possibly died:

Christening: 14 FEB 1836 Old Gravel Lane Saint George In The East Independest, Stepney, London, England
