I am of the Walsall Paddock line as follows.
Phineas snr abt 1824 - 1901 Phineas jnr 1862 - 1933
Joseph 1890 - 1960 my mother Marion 1921 - 2005

Phineas snr married Rebecca Cater abt 1826 - 1892 they had several children, one being Hezekiah an older brother of Phineas jnr.

on 1861 census the family has a 9 yr old Erskiah, no birth registered in this name, so taking it as a bad spelling error and is Hezekiah (a family name).

This is the only census relating to Hezekiah.

A Hezekiah died 1922 with correct year of birth now in Mansfield Notts.

Found an Issac Paddock on 1901 and 1911 censuses in Mansfield.

In 1901 he is from Walsall and a bricklayer - the Paddock family trade. He is only 39 though. He is married to a Mary who is 26 and 2 children Hannah 4 and William.

1911 Isaac is ageing fast and is 57 Mary 35 no Hannah, other children, married for 12 years.

Looked for marriage, found in 1903, lied on census. Age changed between 1901 and 1911, lied on census. Hannah's birth in mmn not Paddock as in 1901 census, lied on census.

Can't find an Isaac to relate to this one. No death for this Isaac but Mary Paddock marries latter part of 1922 after Hezekiah's death early 1922. More lies on census as I believe they are the same man. No I don't have any certs - would you believe what this man tells anyone in authority.

Found someone looking for help with Hezekiah Paddock on another site. Unable to contact him, he is a direct descendant of Isaac/Hezekiah he used both names in his message asking for help to fill in missing years. Stated Isaac/Hezekiah was also a Methodist lay preacher. Mentioned family tale of being in the Boer War, he had discounted this as just a story to hide where Hezekiah was.

My task for you is if you wish to take it - where was he? Have you got possible access to sites that show what he was up to from 1861 until he surfaced in Mansfield in 1901. This will not explode in a few seconds!

Yes under Fin, I believe Phineas snr is in hiding from creditors - note born in Yorks. Phineas snr made bankrupt early 1870s, Fin jnr correct for my gt grandad.

Ann the first family all christened at St Mathew's are all correct but that Phineas 1847 died, they named another son Phineas born 1862 who was my gt grandfather. In the 1901 census Phineas snr in his last few months of life was living with his son Phineas jnr and my 10 yr old grandfather Joseph.

The other Phineas from Bloxwich is from another family who I am trying to tie up with my Paddocks.

Well it's taken a few years but I've got most of the story now :-D

Hezekiah went to South Africa and in 1876 aged 24 married a 15 yr old girl. 4 daughters were born, 2 died in infancy. The other 2 married and had families in South Africa. I can't find a death for Hezekiah wife.

Hezekiah appears in Mansfield Nottinghamshire late 1890s as Isaac Paddock with Mary Ann Hyatt and her daughter. They claim to be married but aren't married until 1903 when they go to the registry office in Nottingham, Isaac names his father as Phineas Paddock a deceased bricklayer. Hezekiah and Mary Ann have 10 children first one born last quarter 1898 but only 3 survive infancy. For the censuses of 1901 and 11 Hezekiah was adjusting his age and he was younger at his marriage to Mary Ann than the 1901 census. He says he's 38 in 1903 and in reality was 51 years old. Mary Ann was 28 years old.

Hezekiah died suddenly on 27 March 1922 and his death was registered as Hezekiah with his correct age so Mary Ann, in registering his death, shows she knew who he was and his true age. Mary Ann remarried the last quarter of 1922.

I do not know why he left South Africa but he was using an alias for the rest of his life. He may have been a bigamist. He was supposed to be a lay preacher in Mansfield. Looks like a respected builder to those around him but he was hiding the truth. He at least was honest with Mary Ann. Could give him the benefit of the doubt as may have married Mary Ann in 1903 because his South African wife may have died by then. Who knows but at least I've filled in some of his life.

What an intriguing story Pat! Hezekiah was certainly what could be called 'a right character!' I suppose it just goes to prove we should never give up looking as new records are coming online all the time.

Do you have Mary Ann in 1939? Her new husband was nearer her age being born in 1877.
