Andrew- Harry and Henry are often interchangeable.
It's definitely not the son of Harry/ Henry Emmerson and Ann Foster- he died in the US:
Name: Harry Emmerson Gender: Male Race: White Age: 87 Birth Date: 4 Jun 1886 Birth Place: England Death Date: 17 Sep 1973 Death Place: Ft Wayne, Allen, Indiana, USA Marital Status: Widowed Father: Harry Emmerson Mother: Annie Foster --------------------------------------------------------
So this is the birth certificate you need to confirm mother:
EMMERSON, HENRY - GRO Reference: 1886 D Quarter in NOTTINGHAM Volume 07B Page 363 ------------------------------------------------------
I suspect Henry was the illegitimate son of Matilda (as said before, you'll need the cert to confirm), but brought up as the son of Matilda's brother, William.
William and his wife/ partner Rebecca had been together a long time and only had one daughter Mary/ Polly:
1891 England, Wales & Scotland Census Transcription New Dock Street, Great Grimsby, Caistor, Lincolnshire, England
William Emerson Head Married Male 42 1849 Dockside Labourer Nottingham Rebecca Emerson Wife Married Female 41 1850 - Lincolnshire, England Polly Emerson Daughter Single Female 16 1875 - Grimsby, Lincolnshire, England Harry Emerson Son Single Male 4 1887 - Nottingham Charles Porter Boarder Single Male 33 1858 Fisherman Borough, Middlesex, England John Carney Boarder Single Male 56 1835 Fisherman Poplar, Middlesex, England James Speedy Lodger Married Male 35 1856 Jet Worker Whitby, Yorkshire, England Mary Speedy Lodger Married Female 36 1855 - Kettering, Northamptonshire, England

Yes, Chris- need to know if he has the actual certificate.
Pickering Emmerson's parents do have a grandson Henry with them on the 1861 & 1871 census which I presume is the one he's trying to link?-
1861 England, Wales & Scotland Census Transcription 7, Crocus Street, St Mary, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England
Jonathan Emmerson Head Married Male 62 1799 Labourer Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, Sarah Emmerson Wife Married Female 63 1798 - Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, Jonathan Emmerson Son Unmarried Male 28 1833 Carter Nottingham, Nottinghamshire Sarah Emmerson Daughter Unmarried Female 25 1836 Seamstress Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, Matilda Emmerson Daughter Unmarried Female 21 1840 Seamstress Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, Henry Emmerson Grandson - Male 2 1859 - Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, -----------------------------------------
I think this is the Henry that married Ann Foster and had this son Harry (Chris posted the 1891 census & 1901 census earlier):
EMMERSON, HARRY mmn FOSSER GRO Reference: 1886 S Quarter in NOTTINGHAM Volume 07B Page 361
If you don't have the birth certificate, getting it will give you his exact date of birth and then you'll know if it's the same one that married Caroline Steer. -------------------------------------
Possibly Harry senior's death (he was recorded as deceased on Henry jnr marriage):
Name: Harry Emmerson Estimated birth year: abt 1859 Registration Year: 1897 Registration Quarter: Apr-May-Jun Age at Death: 38 Registration district: Nottingham Inferred County: Nottinghamshire Volume: 7b Page: 221
EDIT: Sorry Chris, just seen that you also posted this death.

No maiden name given on the birth (the Fosser maiden name is possibly Foster)
EMMERSON, HENRY - GRO Reference: 1886 D Quarter in NOTTINGHAM Volume 07B Page 363
EMMERSON, HARRY FOSSER GRO Reference: 1886 S Quarter in NOTTINGHAM Volume 07B Page 361 --------------------------------------
Do you have the birth certificate? Is it possible that Henry was the illegitimate child of Matilda Emmerson (the daughter of Pickering Emmerson?) -----------------------------------------
Royal Naval Reserve Service Records Index, 1860-1955 Name: Henry Emmerson Birth Date: 31 Oct 1885 Birth Place: Nottingham Date: 1908-1955 Service number: C 5153 http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D8576805#imageViewerLink
I would assume this is the same man- there are several entries some 21st October and some 31st October- born Nottingham:
Looking at the distorted image image, it gives father as William:
Name: Henry Emmerson Birth Date: 21 Oct 1885 Birth Place: Nottingham Date: 1908-1955 Service number: SB 1
