Where has James Sherratt gone?

Gordon Report 6 Dec 2016 09:39

Hi Folks
Usually manage to solve family research mysteries by myself but this one has me baffled:
James Sherratt b.Nottingham 1863 to Joseph Sharratt/Sherratt (1820-1865) and Eliza Kelsall (1833-1902). Surname on the index is spelt "Sharrett". Have him in the 1881 census living with his mother and his brother, Charles at 10 Queens Villas, Nottingham. His occupation is given as "Printer Compositor". Here the trail runs cold. I cannot find him in any later census. neither can I find a death entry or emigration record. The surname is frequently spelt incorrectly so have tried as many variations as I can think of but with no success. Can anybody help?

Thanks Shirley. Will check census records under that spelling. Haven't posted this before. Can see other posts regarding Sherratt ancestors but none appear to relate.

25 August 1871 - Nottinghamshire Guardian - Nottingham, Nottinghamshire

A Girl Burnt To Death In Nottingham.
On Friday afternoon Mr. Coroner Browne held an inquest at the General Hospital, touching the death of a girl named Eliza Ann Sherratt, aged 12 years, of Waterway-street, who died on Wednesday last. It appeared from the evidence that a woman named Mrs Taylor was at Mrs. Sherratt's house on Tuesday night "drawing cotton lace". There was a candle burning in the room, and on Mrs. Taylor snuffing it part of the wick fell on to the cotton lace and caused it to ignite. An alarm was raised and the deceased girl who had been in bed, came running down with her nightdress on. The blaze caught the thin fabric of the dress, and the poor girl was completely enveloped in flames in a very short time. A man named John slack rushed into the house and threw a cloak which was at hand, over the girl, but she was so severely burnt, that it was found necessary to take her to the Hospital. She there lingered in great pain until her death, which took place on Wednesday evening.
The jury returned a verdict of "accidental death", and censured the carelessness displayed with regard to the candle.

Many thanks folks. Have been sitting here checking James Cherrett entries in census for 1891 and 1901. Can't find any that work. The marriage entry you mention is new to me so it may be the only lead available to me. If all else fails will order a copy of the cert.

Send Wendy a message on her thread - she'll hopefully be able to look at the OPR copy of the marriage at the RO or may even have it on disc. It will give his and his Father's name and occupation which will help to determine whether it's him or not. Give a link to this thread.

Wow Chris. Was not expecting that. Very sad to see a death like that. I guess health and safety regulations were a little different back then!

Greyghost - thanks for the suggestion. Have mailed Wendy and hopefully she will be able to help.

Hi Andy. Very interesting entries. Live in Ireland myself and didn't think to check the Irish census! Given the name of James's wife, looks like this is the James Cherrett who married Mary Elizabeth Oughton in 1896. Got very excited when I saw from the Irish census that James's occupation was given as "printer" which ties in with the occupation for my James Sherratt in 1881. However, the 1911 census record for the family indicate that James was born in Durham so excitement has waned a little. Really appreciate your help.

This looks like the 'James' on the 1901/1911 census which is a shame as it looked like Andy was on to something there

Well Choccy. Looks like you have resolved this conundrum for me. Had looked for emigration records before but obviously missed this. Sad to see though that he did not last long after he moved to Australia.

Sincere thanks to you and the others who have helped me out on this today. I am very grateful.

Hi Gordon,

Wendy here, well if the death in Australia is right then the marriage in 1896 is not James but did you still want me to look at it.
