You will probably never know exactly what happened. A great aunt of mine was abandoned by her husband who supposedly went to Canada - maybe a good story at the time which has been passed down. I have found him remarried in the next census (1911) a couple of counties away, with 3 children and with a further 9 to come!!
People fell out, weren't compatable etc and just parted as divorce was so expensive. There are many couples to be found either bigamously married or just living together as man and wife.

Charles is my maternal great-grandfather. He married my great-grandmother Mary Jane Stanley in 1868 in Leicester [3rd quarter 1868 Vol.7A/339] then absconded in 1881 to Stroud, where he got married again to Louisa Perrott in Gloucester [2nd quarter 1885 Vol. 6A/499]. There does not seem to have been a divorce, unsurprisingly, but he was tried for neglecting to maintain his first marriage children in Leicester in 1881! I would love to hear from anyone who knows Charles from either of his two families, so I can find out what actually happened. My grandmother never talked about it!
