missing mother's name

Dea, "tends" is right as not every missing MMN means the mother is unmarried. I have seen some where it is not shown, but I have the certs which do have the MMN.

Kath - the mother's maiden names have been added right back to 1837 if you use the new search on the GRO website.............

You have to register.........

It depends on what year the birth took place. The mother's maiden name was only added to the GRO index after 1911, so before this it isn't there (although I think they are starting to go back and add the maiden name at the moment but I don't think they have completed this yet). The maiden name WILL be on the birth certificate though.

I think it tends to mean that the mother was unmarried.

can someone tell me why when I find a birth on the gpo index that mother's name is missing could it mean the child was just left somewhere
