Squeaky020 Report 24 May 2017 21:50

Can I just recap Alvie...

So Elizabeth and John were both widowed before they married one another?

So Elizabeth Williams married a Vaughn who died and then she went on to marry John Bowen?

So in the 1911 that you posted, Charles is named as a nephew but the Williams are his wifes family not his? and where is Elizabeth in 1911?

Sorry if I'm a bit confused :-S

rootgatherer Report 24 May 2017 21:41

Sorry to harp back to it but the Charles in 1881 that is an infant is living in the same area as this Elizabeth. Could she be his mother? Also the head of the household where he is living is a Blacksmith. Co-incidence?

I was thinking they're both very young to be widowed but they are both ABOUT 21. John Powell and Eliza Powell? are the witnesses.
She makes her mark as Elizabeth Bowen late Vaughan. Her father is Thomas Williams, a labourer.

Alviegal ,

is this a Eureka moment??

I was trying to connect the Charles Bowen RootsGatherer found as it states Nephew and the family were Williams, in your post, Elizabeth Vaughn's father is a Williams...does that mean Elizabeth was married before John Bowen as she isnt a Williams?

:-)

alviegal

alviegal Report 24 May 2017 20:49

Here is that marriage in more detail Maddie. They have both been widowed and John is a labourer. The family posted by rootgatherer in 1911 are Williams.

There are other Bucknell / Bucknalls - Oxfordshire, Lincolnshire, Staffordshire. Just thinking maybe the census clerk assumed he meant the Shropshire one.

Although I must admit that searches of the 1881 census on that basis don't produce any likely results.

alviegal

alviegal Report 24 May 2017 18:10

I was also looking at the above with mother, Lizzie. Of course, his father could be made up. Was wondering about this 1881. Seemingly Munslow isn't far from Tugford. Bucknell is further away though.

Bucknell, Shropshire can't be his place of birth, unless he was born under another surname.

Charles Christopher was the only Charles Bowen born in the right reg district for Bucknell, and we've ruled him out.

Also, 1901 is the only census in which a Charles Bowen born Bucknell appears.

No mother's maiden surname given on the GRO index so that looks to be the birth of the Charles above with mother Lizzie. Maybe she went on to marry someone called John.

Not seeing Charles in 1891 so he is maybe lurking under a stepfather's surname.

rootgatherer

I wonder if John was a stepfather's name?

Squeaky020 Report 24 May 2017 17:25

Hi RG,

thank you for you post!

I had not come across that entry in 1911 - in the 1901 it states his place of birth as Bucknell, Shropshire.

I will write the entry you found down and see if it relates anywhere along the line - it states nephew to Charles Williams - maybe I will come across Williams, it will be difficult though as I cannot seem to place Charles birth entry or parents etc. On the parish record for his marriage it says his dad's name is John Bowen. That doesnt really narrow it down much.
I've tried looking for a Charles and John Bowen in the 1881 as Charles would only have been 3-5 years old but going by the Bucknell, Shropshire birth place, I'm struggling .... or blind... :-D

Help is appreciated.

Have you ruled this one out please?

Still struggling to find Charles!

Where is he in the 1911??

Why is he not with his wife ?

I'm really puzzled :-S

Squeaky020

Squeaky020 Report 15 May 2017 22:46

thanks for that Gwyn, yes you are right ! My charles father is John.

So still searching for more facts to link up Charles' parents and then possibly find him and parents in census records.

Charles Bowen seems a very common name, I'm going to have to look up registration district names as I know Shropshire but are unsure of what ones are for that area.

Thanks for you continued help.

Gwyn in Kent

Gwyn in Kent Report 15 May 2017 22:23

alviegal noted that Charles Christopher had a father named William.

This is probably William's marriage, so not the correct Charles.

So......

I'm still looking into Charles....

I disregarded Gwyn in Kent's suggestion of Charles Christopher birth registered in Clun, not realising where this place is....it is in shropshire....so i have been looking into the GRO index of MMN as Whitingam....

Looking for a Whitingam marriage to a Bowen to see if it matches up with any of the details I have already....

Cannot seem to find anything....

Stumped.... :-S

Squeaky020

Squeaky020 Report 14 May 2017 22:06

Also , just to confirn we have the right Charles in 1901 living next door to bertha, just in case there is a very big coincidence... the marriage witness for Bertha and Charles is Thomas Harmer - son of the household that Charles was boarding in, in 1901.

:-) :-) :-)

So he was born in Bucknell, Shropshire and his dad's name is John. I am hoping this info will help me to find charles in other census etc for his parents....

Thanks for any help
