My dad John, was born 7th June 1920 in Barnhill poorhouse Springburn Glasgow to Mary Kean a farm servant from Cleggan Co-Galway. According to the poor relief forms Mary and her brother John were born in Boston, Massachusetts U.S.A. to Dudley Kane & Annie Morgan. John was born in 1898 and Mary in 1901. In 1902 Their dad Dudley died and in 1904 their mum Annie died, because of this John & Mary were sent to Ireland and brought up by their great grandparents John & Mary Toole. Mary did her best to care for John and worked in three different Glasgow hospitals as a domestic to pay for his keep. When John was eight months old he was given to a Mrs Grant in the Gorbals area of Glasgow, who, for whatever reason handed John over to the Evers family who loved & cared for him and brought him up as one of their own. Over the next few months contact with Mary was lost. I feel Mary may have gone back to Ireland then maybe back to Boston. I dont know this for sure but I really would love to know what happed to my grandmother, her brother John and any other members of the Kean,Keane,Kane family. My dad died age 61yrs. He was a good and lovely man. We havn't been able, so far, to find any more information, but if any one recognise's this story, please get in touch. |
