I am astonished that anyone should want to read an Irritations and Moans thread and then promptly announce that they are irritated by people moaning. I am also new to family history. I have done a million and one things wrong so far. Tuning in to this thread was not one of them. Yes there is a bit of slagging off here ( if anyone does not want that then I suggest they stick to the 'hugs and kisses' threads on the General Board ), but on the whole I have found most of the criticisms constructive and educational. I would hope that has been two way traffic and that the experienced people also understand ( and remember ) the naivety of the newbies. This thread demonstrates that there is no easy answer to many of the problems raised other than awareness and I for one am now very much aware that some days I will be the pigeon and other days I will be the statue. I suspect that when Jools started this thread she rather expected that many of the moans etc would centre on look ups and the way everyone approached them. In that case this must surely be the most effective place for the thread. I would not wish to see this thread on the General Board. Having come across some of the moronic clowns who patrol that Board just looking to start a slanging match I could not envisage that any of the constructive elements of this thread would ever have seen the light of day over there. Paula, you have selected a few highly critical posts. There are many others that give praise to the thread and it's contributors. Have another look at it and see if you get a more balanced view. Keith I love the pigeon and statue metaphor. Sometimes I feel as if I am both at the same time! |

Pigeons irritate me. Not had any problems on any of these boards. Sometimes things get crotchetty, usually due to misunderstandings. I work with computers - if you want a real slanging match, go for a computer board. They can be dreadful. GR boards are a breath of fresh air. Computers irritate me too. And after 25 years of working with/against/in-spite-of them, you think I'd know better and get a proper job... Can come in handy though. I recently exported my GR tree as a GEDCOM, manually edited it to move a connection that I had got wrong, then loaded it back again. Sad or what :o) |

GUYS, for god's sake. I wish I had never mentioned pigeons. Perhaps, in this case, I should have referred to Great Black Back'ed Gulls and Main'sails ( and, perhaps, computers and puddles on the floor). We could start a whole new thread on this one. Shall we put it on the 'Trying to Find' Board? Brenda In the dialogue of my offspring, ' I hear where you'r coming from' ( that's the socially acceptable version ). Stay cool everyone ( including those in Queensland who are melting in 31C and for ever complaining about it [love you Sharyn]) Keith Perhaps I should add the old ;). Just in case anyone gets uptight. |

By the way If anyone comes across Marjorie, would you let her know that I would like words with her about her extremely rude thread on the Tips Board yesterday. |

Keith - there are 2 varieties of winged rats - 1 is known as feral pigeon ratticus, the other is known as seagullis generalis nuisancis. I think they both need serious population control - but that is my personal opinion and not one which I intend to discuss on the board.. Sounds like psittacosis could be a consideration (and it is zoonotic). Jools |

Jools I hear what you say about winged rats and white phantoms crapping all over the place. I am taken aback by the suggestion that the lady I admire the most might be contaminated by some birdlike infliction. Please fill me in sometime? Careful, you never know what imposotors might be listening. Yours, Keith |

Hey Jools Everytime I come on here you are having a good old moan. I don't know whereabouts in Scarborough you are, but we ought to meet up and moan together. Susan, Scarborough |

I have been doing further research and it seems that Captain Noah's grandfather (paternal line) was a Meths user who was 969 when he died. Is this a mistake or can somebody tell me the RDA of meths for longevity. Beth :) |

My biggest gripe is getting a 'page not found' on this site when trying to add an answer to a request for help on the message board. maureen |

Susan - but this is a _moan thread_ where better for people to moan, chunter, grump and let off steam :)) And it keeps it all together instead of cluttering up the board with whinging threads. The general sunny disposition of those on this board is reflected in the high standard of humour, good natured leg pulling, and generally high standard of spelling & grammar - with all that as a plus, it must be the most user-friendly moan thread on the go right now. In answer to your second - Burniston. Jools |

Hey Keith - don't know about racehorses on Scarborough's beach - but I've just had a few days in Northumberland - now that's where your racehorses should be - sandy beach as far as the eye can see and only one other person to be seen. Bliss. |

......... The beach, empty except for the small hunched figure of a Coal Gatherer, scavenging the beach for sufficient fuel to keep her family warm. |

I'm fed up being ignored right now. Lovely people have helped me. For about a year I have been helping people, and more recently less and less people are saying thank you. Surely, that's just normal politeness. Also people asking for searches that they could do themselves. I'm just not in a very happy mood at the moment at all! |

Keither - you talk about 'naivity of newbies' but surely it's not naive for them to just not say 'thank you' - surely it's just impolite and rather rude? I was a newbie once, we all were. When the majority of us were newbies, the internet had not taken of UK Genealogy wise like it is now. We had to go to record offices etc, and if you ask me for those who don't go to them, they're missing out on the whole searching themselves. It's part of the fun (sometimes lol). Chloe |

Geoff - you saw me LOL Well OK I wasn't gathering coal but apart from that - definitely hunched against the cold - blowing a force 6 straight from the north east and rain/sleet with it. Perhaps that's why hardly anyone else was daft enough to be there :))) |
