Find Ancestors

No Jules, Don't pull the plug, please. I am sure I must be connected to Cayenne and Able (whose descendant Able Seaman Noah has already been referred to). I was hoping to find out if anybody has any connections to a place called Sodham. I think I have rellies there because my dad has often mentioned they all come from there. I think the exact place is 'Sodham Hall'. Does any one know where this is? Beth :)))

Have to say I support those of you who rail against unpunctuated and unformatted requests. I find the temptation to reformat it (sometimes a little tongue in cheek) too strong to resist - and the benefit is that at least I understand the request after that process. Ruined a keyboard with spluttered coffee once, when someone pm'ed me asking if I thought they were 'thick or summit' Yes, The Da Vinci code was a good read, story got a bit 'butterfly'* style at times, but held me wrapt - like a Choc-Ice ! Who would have thought that the Holy Grail was neither the Chalice with the Palace or the Flagon with the Dragon. (Prize for anybody recognising the provence of that quote !) *Butterflies tend to flit about .... I'll get me coat.

David of Mid-Beds - oh how I agree with you on the 'This Page Cannot be Found' thingie. It seems to have started when GR did their major front page change and added all their new bits. It's driving my CRAZY!!! I try and sort of slowly sneak up on the title required, plonk the cursor with great precision on the exact middle of the title and CLICK. This does work sometimes, but not always........... took me just 10 tries to add this reply, so I beat you by 5! I sent a note yesterday on this subject to GR - we'll see if they reply and/or can sort it out... at least I now know I'm not alone. Janet

People who moan that people shouldn't be moaning yet have obviously sat and read most of the thread to know what the content is all about!

I am sooooooo irritated, why, because my husband thought it would be a good idea to get me away from the computer, to get some fresh air. OK, we had a lovely lunch, followed by a visit to a Red Cross Open Garden. Yes we had a nice woodland walk. Yes we bought a pair of ancient storm lanterns, which will look very good on the patio, once he does them up. But for goodness sake, I missed the end of an ebay auction. I had to leave a bid so I lost the census discs I wanted by less than 50p!!!!! I needed those discs, I really did. I am such a sad case LOL. Linda

Lou How I agree! Someone has read over ten pages of this thread and then posted that it is 'tiresome'. Personally, I never bother to read on if I find something tiresome. Keith (Sigh) I knew you were too good to be true. Laird I have noticed someone (I will not embarrass her by naming her) has become so exasperated by the 'breathless rush' mob that she retypes their postings into a logical, readable, sequence - rather like my compulsive urge to tidy up the books in the Library!LoL! As for things to be glad about - there are many ecstatic postings on this board, when people find a long-lost rellie, alive or dead, or receive a kindness great and small from a stranger. The whole idea of this Moans and Irritations Thread, was to get all the gripes in one concentrated place - you don't even have to look at the thread to know what its about, let alone read through it all. Finally, for those who disapprove of the silliness of parts of this thread - All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Marjorie

AND people who ask for look ups on the early census discs, who then don't even stick around for a couple of minutes to answer a query which would make the search easier. Do they really think that we type in a name and up comes the answer. The 41 and 51 can mean looking through about 100 pages of grotty writing each time to try and find them. I know we don't have to do it, we volunteer - but !!!!! Thank you for this thread, otherwise I might be a bit sharp in my reply. come to think of it, I was tonight. At last! A novice is finally able to help someone out. Further to Beth's request yesterday for further information on Sodham Hall, I have just been looking up some obscure book that someone loaned me a while ago. It is called ' Mark Thatcher's Essential Guide to Finding Your Way Around '. It seems that Sodham Hall is the ancestral seat of the Earls of Chillout, a manor of some 600 acres near Bendover in Kent. The manor includes the famous village of Futtock's End, where a T.V. production was filmed some years ago. The original Earl Chillout, then the Duke du Moe'nin, came over with William of Normandy's invasion team in 1066. Presumably Sodham Hall was appropriate reward for his support for William's claim to the English throne. The book explains that his apparent demotion was due to some sneaky part time genealogist of the day who managed to get sight of his family tree, found some problem with his pedigree and promptly claimed the Dukedom for himself ( I think I have read of something similar elsewhere lately ). Happy to do further look ups for any of the good people of this thread, anytime save for Mondays to Thursdays, weekends and public holidays. Regards to all Keith

I want to add the idiot who bumped a thread i originally put on last year about going to newcastle. library, I had loads of requests for help and yet not one person who asked for a look up noticed the my original thread was months old,,

Thanks for the advice Jools. I am afraid that Fridays are 'off' now anyway. I have just signed up for genealogy classes on that day. I particularly don't want to miss this week's lecture entitled 'Tricks and Short Cuts' ( although by now I know most of them, thanks to all the fine upstanding people who have so generously highlighted them on this thread of yours ).
