Keith I love the pigeon and statue metaphor. Sometimes I feel as if I am both at the same time!

Conan

Conan Report 15 Apr 2005 15:12

I am astonished that anyone should want to read an Irritations and Moans thread and then promptly announce that they are irritated by people moaning. I am also new to family history. I have done a million and one things wrong so far. Tuning in to this thread was not one of them. Yes there is a bit of slagging off here ( if anyone does not want that then I suggest they stick to the 'hugs and kisses' threads on the General Board ), but on the whole I have found most of the criticisms constructive and educational. I would hope that has been two way traffic and that the experienced people also understand ( and remember ) the naivety of the newbies. This thread demonstrates that there is no easy answer to many of the problems raised other than awareness and I for one am now very much aware that some days I will be the pigeon and other days I will be the statue. I suspect that when Jools started this thread she rather expected that many of the moans etc would centre on look ups and the way everyone approached them. In that case this must surely be the most effective place for the thread. I would not wish to see this thread on the General Board. Having come across some of the moronic clowns who patrol that Board just looking to start a slanging match I could not envisage that any of the constructive elements of this thread would ever have seen the light of day over there. Paula, you have selected a few highly critical posts. There are many others that give praise to the thread and it's contributors. Have another look at it and see if you get a more balanced view. Jools, how did you cope with no computer for three days? Did you get the shakes, or whatever the genealogy withdrawal symptoms are? I saw Lairds post and was going to offer my Yorkshire services, but he is obviously a one woman man. Linda

Jools Report 15 Apr 2005 13:16

Don't panic Laird - Mrs Grumpy is back :)) Oh that I was 'young Jools' - that unfortunately ceased to be quite a few years back and I am now the older side of 50. Where was I - himself decided we needed a break (for the first time in 15 years so I suppose i shouldn't complain). 3 days of absolute silence apart from lambs, birds, the sea etc - BLISS. Back to the grindstone now though. Let me know what needs looking for and I'll give it a twirl tonight. Jools PS - do you mean WitchyPoo or was that a mistranscription of Itchicoo? There was a park near there I seem to recall.

Nicely put Alan. Another way to look at the 'irritations' is to take them as tips ... Hey, where's young Jools this week ? ------------------------------------------ (I need her to trawl the East Riding .... lol) PS. Reb - nah, stay as sweet as you are ! PPS. Anybody using the name WitchyPoo ?

I'll repost this. I wrote it a couple of months ago after a seriously bad rellie day. Ninety-nine times out of a hundred it's my rellies that get to me! A When you’re census-incensed and you sag in your chair, ‘cos you can’t find your rellies, though you know they are there. When you’ve B.V.R.2’d, L.D.S’d, I.G.I’d, and your dang-blasted rellies continue to hide. When the only occasion they spell their name right, is the only occasion it’s then mis-transcribed. When they lie ‘bout their age, when their birthplace has changed, when they pop out 2nd April to visit a friend. .... Drop in to this forum, we’ll soon set you right. Then a cup of hot chocolate, and a nice early night. Anyone want to add a couple of lines!

Dear Lola An irritation shared, is an irritation halved. It's so good to know it's not just me! Also, better to blow off steam a little here, than 'having a go' on another thread. Rant, rave a lttle, snarl a bit, then move on :o) We all get taken for a ride and taken advantage of, but if we get one good friend in ten, it's worth the investment. Slightly hypocritical as I'm certain I have taken more than I've given - but hey, I'm not counting if no-one else is :o) Oh, and in pointing out our complaining, are you not blowing off a little frustration and steam yourself? If you were, and you feel better, then good for you. Perhaps we should rename the thread to the 'blow off steam here' thread! COMPLETE BEGINNERS DON'T BE PUT OFF, I'M A BEGINNER. I'VE ONLY BEEN DOING THIS FOR THREE MONTHS. HAPPY TO POINT YOU IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION (WHICH MIGHT BE TO SOMEONE WHO KNOWS MORE THAN I DO) AS IS ANYONE ELSE IN THIS THREAD. That's more of a highlight than a shout :o) Alan UPDATE - I've just read back through this thread and spotted a couple of people moaning about things that I'm guilty of LOL. I promise to be good next time. A couple of the people that were quoted then came back with happier posts. I still think that a beginners message board is needed - I was a bit daunted when I joined a few months ago. Somewhere where you can ask what BVRI means, like I had to!

Yes Rosemary and Lyla, I've just fallen into that trap again. I and three others did a look up recently and there has not been any reply at all! Never mind eh? I'll probably still help others if I can in the future just like you will too, because THANKFULLY there are far many more nice people out there than there are rude ones!! (By the way, this thread is better than the soaps on tv!)

SO, I SENT ALL MY TREE TO 'CONNECTION' AND THEY'VE TAKEN IT AND RUN! THEY OBVIOUSLY HAD TREE THAT I'M RESEARCHING AND NEEDED MY NAMES AND DATES AND OFFERED ME IN RETURN THEIR TREE.... Sharyn Quite right. Better 'skellies in your rellies' than 'sheep in your...' Sorry, I should be discussing this with Laird, he's the expert. Clearly you're having some luck though. You've found out your skeleton's name is Ian and that he comes from the Fens. No luck on my onions I'm afraid. I think they've gone to ground. Alan

Keith How wonderful to meet a like-minded person - yes, I get out quite a lot, but they always take me back again. I have to confess I know less than nothing about Formula 1, 2 and 3, (and am determined it shall remain so), however I am impressed that you do. I have looked right through the IGI and can't find this Lola you are all talking about and certainly nothing to do with sheep, although there are plenty of GOATS - I assume these have more Mediterranean connections as the British are a Nation of Sheep Lovers, whereas the Ancient Greeks etc were a Nation of Goat Lovers. Have I got this right? Marjorie (no longer barking, more snorting and squealing now)

LOL(a) .. Keith and Alan - some excellent points ! (Sheep get that look when you wear wellies - oops, too much detail)

Margaret I think that, judging by previous posts on this thread, you are very much not alone. It is a pity that GR do not provide some confirmation that the message has been delivered or that the message has been read. Why not try again? This time ask them to respond, even if it is just to acknowledge receipt of your message. Keith

Does anyone find themselves as frustrated and disappointed when, after finding someone on Genes Reunited with a mutual ancestor, they contact them and no reply is ever received. Why, if folk arn't interested enough to reply, do they bother to put themselves/ancestors on the site in the first place? Moan over....

Benjamin

Benjamin Report 13 Apr 2005 18:26

One big irritation and moan is when an ancestor dies just months or even weeks before a vital census, especially the 1851 one which is the first most reliable one.

Alan Report 13 Apr 2005 18:20

Better to be barking up the wrong tree, than up the wrong tree in Barking. Or are you suggesting Lola crashed her Lola in Barking? Alan, barking: at least my wife says I am. P.S. Lolas aren't sheep. On the contrary, they're very, very expensive. P.P.S. Sheep are veggies, and so am I, therefore I'm a sheep..., but if I'm barking, I can't be a sheep, because they go Baaaah, baaaah. I know this because I once camped next to a field of the blasted things. But if this means I'm camp, then clearly I'm not permitted to drive a Lola. Which is fine because I don't. P.P.P.S Not sure if this will work, but if you want to see what I do drive... www*smartgroups*com/groups/split_infinity
