I am trying to find the new surname of Donna Marie Morris born in Meriden in 1972. qtr (2) ref 9a 2711 mothers name Rtvers. She was adopted shortly after birth. I am researching on behalf of her aunt.

Theres a few things that could give you clues but as it wasn't legally formalised untill 1927 I don't know how you would definately come to an answer one way or another.

Unfortunately one of them will be the 1911 census which won't be available for several years.

I have a great x 2 uncle who was adopted (informally) from the woman up the road as she struggled with the number of children she had and he took on our family name. It was only later I found this out after telling my auntie how much I had struggled to find him. I have quite a few people in my tree on census info who show under relationship as adopted. some keep their original name, some do, but then change it to the family name later on.

I myself am adopted and under my legal name that my adoptive family gave me you would never find a birth record for me unless you knew my birth name. Which is where I'd look first. If it was done within the same family the person could have kept the same surname though. Did the person marry at all? Or do you know the date of death? Both would be in their known name and would give you their age (although I have had ones that have been a couple of years out and not necessarily increased ages to allow one party to get married.) and a birth date and then you can double check for a birth.

I know that adoption was not formalised before 1927 and that's the problem. Does is mean that if an adoption took place before this time you just come to a dead end? He could have been an illegitimate child born into the family and brought up by a relative or he could have been born in a workhouse or been a foundling. I don't know where to start

Adoption was not a legal procedure until 1927 approx..........................so there will not be any records, if he was taken in by a family other than his birth family

How can I find out if a relative was adopted, i can find no trace of a birth in the name of this person so I believe he was adopted in around 1903. The family lived in and around Hackney, Stratford and Leyton.
