There are two William H Appletons listed with 1917 date of death - Which regiment was he in?

As a point of interest - I went all cold when I read your post of 12:39 - my gtgt grandfather was also killed in the Battle of Arras in 1917

Let me know the regiment and I let you know the GRO references which you can use to order a death certificate

You will get a proper death certificate if you order one, but as I said, no more detail than you get from the Commonwealth War Graves site.

His name was William Henry Appleton, hw was from Whitby in Yorkshire and died 18th July 1917 The battle of Arras in France.

Thank you for your replies. I was hopeing for a proper certificate, but if what I've just seen on Scotlandspeople is anything to go by, it's just a list. I think I'll save my money and not bother buying credits on the findmypast website.

You can have a look at an example page of a WW1 death register (for a Scottish regimant, but very much as Kathleen has stated) from a link at:

You will probably have more information from the CWGC site than you will get on the death certificate.

I ordered my great uncle's who had died in the first world war and it simply gave his name, age, regiment and the cause of death was just "killed in action".

I belive you can order the certs. online at the GRO, just like deaths in this country... I think the findmypast website has overseas death registrations .

Hubby's great grandfather was killed during the first world war. We found him on CWGC website and we've even been to France to visit his grave.

Is it possible to get his death certificate?
