Morning All!

I wonder if somebody would mind looking at census pages, I am trying to find the place of birth of Peter Morgan, I am trying to help another member and at the moment neither of us have Ancestry. Apparently the birthplace is shown as Ragosa Austria, I believe this has been misread as I can't find any record of such a place.

1881
Peter, Mary, Nicholas and George, living 141 Back Thornton Street reg no Rg 11 Piece 5017 Folio 39 Page 2 Reg Distr South Shields Sub District Westoe Civil Parish Westoe

1891 50 and 51 Commercial Road (presumed to be South Shields), no other details known

1901 14 Frances Street, he is now a widower.

Thanks

Duncan

1881 is free on both ancestry and on familysearch.org

1881 just gives NK (not known) for birthplace of Peter

On the 1881 he is shown as a sailor, place of birth N/K (not known) - but you can see that yourself on ancestry or familysearch.org free.

1891 Seaman A.B. and Im afraid it does give just Austria

1901 does look like Ragosa, Austria (British Subject) and he is now a barge waterman.

You may want to check out National archives to see if he appears anywhere but he may well have anglicised his name.

1891 only says Austria

1901 does look like Ragosa on image - has British Subject in brackets

This looks like the possible marriage to Mary - you could buy this to see what is entered for his father?

The marriage cert should help;

Duncan,

Perhaps it is an error for Ragusa, the old name of Dubrovnik, which may well have been in the Austro-Hungarian empire in the C19.

Thank you Peter

If Ragusa is the old name for Dubrovnik I am sure you have cracked it.
