Is it just me or do others also have an increasing number of unread messages in their Mail Sent Folders?

I have notice that since the Message icon on every page was changed from showing the number of unread messages waiting in the Inbox, to just a a single envelope icon, the number of messages I have sent individuals that have never been read is growing. One is now several months old.

Previously messages I sent were always read and about 99% replied to.One can tell a message has not been read because there is a mauve envelope icon next to the message.

I know the system automatically sends an message notification email to individuals but some mail systems could mistake this for spam.

I am finding it quite frustrating having sent a message to an individual for it never to be looked at.

thanks for the info on the unread message's being purple,i hadn't noticed before.
Which is making me pretty annoyed now! as i have sent messages to a person who has never answered one single message,not even to say "don't bother me"
It's a real shame as me and this person have the same Scottish surname and about 15 or more hot matches of my direct ancestors.
well at least i know the person exists,i was beginning to think he was one of these ghost members that you hear about.

I have also had a few unread messages recently to.

However one was unread for about six months and when I did receive contact it turned out she had allowed her GR membership to lapse. So it makes me wonder if lapsed members receive an email prompt???

Hi Donna,
my person has been opening them but then not contacting me,so i have taken a huge chance and given the contact a chance by sending him my home e-mail (don't tell me off)
But i am so frustrated as i can clearly see that we have loads of the same direct ancestors and he could be closely related to my Granddad,perhaps his brothers son or grandson.
So I'll wait and see if he opens the mail,then i will know he has my e-mail and if he still doesn't get back to me then I'll leave him alone for good.
Phew! feel better now have that off my chest

so perhaps i should stop being so annoyed with the contact for a while at least

I can well understand non-paying members not being able to send a reply but everyone can read mail that is sent to them. The point that I was making is that is possible to tell when a message had been read and some of them have never been looked at. This tends to defeat the objective of a genealogy contact site.

It makes me wonder if some members are aware there are messages waiting for them.

If someone is no longer a member then they won't appear on the site at all. The main reason that people don't reply is that the have other things to occupy their life. I have contacts who only log to GR every six months, so don't give up hope....!

I also think there is some confusion here between "Free Members" who have not paid a subscription and "Standard Members" who have

FREE MEMBERS may:

(a) use the free facilities available on the Genes Reunited Service to add all or part of their family tree;
(b) search for individuals using criteria specified by the Genes Reunited Service;
(c) receive email messages sent by Standard and Gold Members. These will be sent to your registered email address and can be viewed in the Message Centre on the Genes Reunited Service.

(ii) Non-Core Service Use and Benefits for Free Members.

Free Members may also:

(a) upload photographs and videos. If any photograph or video contains the image of a living person, the member uploading it must obtain the prior consent of that person to the photograph or video appearing on the Genes Reunited Service; and
(b) opt to receive our newsletter or personalised notification emails relating to individuals listed in the Genes Reunited Service or in census records which appear to be a reasonably close match to people included in your family tree.

STANDARD MEMBERS may:

In addition to the services available to Free Members

(a) send email messages to members;
(b) view the family trees of other members where express permission has been given by that member.

(ii) Non-Core Service Use and Benefits for Standard Members.

Standard Members may also post information and data to any message boards on the Genes Reunited Service.

Hi Mick,
I sent a message to someone I know I am related to, they gave me access to their tree.
When I wrote back ,saying I had a lot of interesting stuff about their gt grandparents- no answer.
Makes you wonder why they are on here atall !

Hi people are rude, on messageing one wrote asking aout my husbands father, and that she had lots on his grandmother who we can't find' I told her all I new, and then heard nothing so I asked to see her tree, and the reply was WHY.

not everyone who has a tree on here is looking for contacts - odd though it may seem!

I used to have one on here as an extra back up to my Rootschat tree.

After the first few weeks got little or no contact from other members. After several years got nothing, So as I did not use the records on here and had Ancestry membership transferred tree to there. Far easier for adding records etc., when I find new ones.

Also many people who start their family history do so later in life - one wonders just how many trees on here belong to members who have long since died and no one in their family can get access to either remove or keep up the tree..... And how many tree there are with less than 10 people on them. I used to have access to several with far less than 10 on them :-D
