The following is a reply from a reverend Bob Horrocks who looks after St James church New Bury. In the family grave are my Grand father and Grandmother plus some other people that I am aware of but I do not know who is CROWTHER Hawarth or who is TONGE William Howarth 21.02.1939. Unfortunately I do not have a birth date for either of them and only a burial date for William Tonge. I am at a loss as to how to find any information on them as they are obviously after the 1911 census. Where can I start looking |

The death records on Ancestry should give you their ages at least - quite possibly dates of birth for the later ones. I am assuming this is in England/Wales? |

Sorry folks. You are quite right. St james Church is in New Bury Near Fanworth Bolton Lancashire. Sorry, we locals think that everybody should know where it is. It may help if I tell you that the church was consecrated in 1865. That should help to narrow the search. I believe that grand-dad was the first occupant in 1927, but that is not set in stone. I have quizzed all my relatives and none of them can shed any light as to the two that I am trying to find information on. |

William Haworth Tonge (1871-1894) was one of the two sons of James Tonge (1846-1905) and Anne Haworth (1846-1874). He had a brother, Richard Henry Tonge (1872-1900). James remarried in 1877 to Ellen Morris. It was also her second marriage and she had a daughter, Elizabeth Alice Haslam by her first husband, Thomas Haslam (1849-1874). James and Ellen had 5 children but only two grew to adulthoos. One was my mother, Eva Tonge (1891-1942). |

My William Tonge is named on his son's marriage certificate as a Glazier. His son, James Tonge married Ann Edwards on 14 Oct 1838 at the Parish Church, Deane St. Mary. James was born in Halliwell in c1816 (data from censuses). I can't find b, m or d for William nor b for James. Most of the family seem to have been painters & decorators. |
