Hi everyone,

I am sorry if this has been asked before.

Does anyone know if the records on Genes Reunited are the same as those on http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/, please?

Are there any differences between what you can view, etc.

Do not know but if you do a free search on both you may get the same results.
Genes;
Portsmouth Evening NewsHampshire, England4 Jul 1891

Genes does not have an advanced search so is less user friendly.

That no longer works


most of the libraries have now apparently stopped allowing out of county people to register as members.

My brother, photo taken in September 1991 just a couple of weeks before he died. ............................................................ To help us and to get better results, please post as much detail as you can, especially name, date(s) and place. Also say what you already know.

I often thought it was a bit rich expecting the library staff in Lancashire to dole out a whole load of access cards etc for people who didnt even pay council tax in their county.?

I have a library card from Essex County Council which allows me remote access to this using the bar code from my library card. That's fair enough I live in Essex and pay their council tax.


Visit your local library and get your own library's version.

and if you live overseas you can always ask someone to look for you.

oh and by the way the original question, yes they are the same records on Genes as on the British Newspaper Archives (they're owned by Brightsolid) and are more comprehensive than the ones available free from the library card.

I am in NZ and have registered in the Lancashire library on line to read the newspapers...
yeah...
I have no plastic card just a number (really long) that i input.
I love the newspapers what a gold mine.
not my relatives have poped up but it lets you know what the UK was like back then...

If you would like to look 'free' at NZ papers then you are very welcome...
