relative on passenger list 1920 to New York

How do you trace a relative on a passenger list of a ship that went to New York in 1920?

Ancestry have New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957.

If they stayed there, it is also possible to search on their census - 1920, 1930 and if indexed 1940.

There is a free site available - mgnv uses it often. He and others would have details on how to use it.
This is the site http://archive.org/details/us_census

The SSDI (death index) is fairly current and on Ancestry as well as for free on familysearch.org.

Obituaries published in Papers or by funeral directors might also be on line.

Unless he arrived in January 1920, he won't be on the 1920 - he shouldn't be on it at all, but the rules weren't always followed.

There are also state census for some states SD 1925/35/45 is a typical set of dates. Check out the collections at:
