If you Google Settlement Act 1662 should give you plent of info. It's all to do with Poor Law and Parish relief. |

If you lived in a parish where you were NOT born and then fell on hard times and needed to claim parish relief (like benefits of today) then the parish might decide to send you back to the parish where you were born so that you would become the responsibility of that parish instead of the one you were living in. |
