The weald page looks like it might be one to probe further.

I was aware of the Nikelas maiden name but cannot find anyone else of that name at Lewes archives or Ancestry site. And never seen it spelt like that anyway.

I AM aware that most hemsleys in Sussex all branch back to George in Isfield 1640, but would be nice to know if my John Hemsley was a close or distant ancestor.

Any info is helpful.

Hello!

I've really hit a wall looking for ancestors of JOHN ('born Buxted' c1796) and JANE ('born Barcombe' c1790) HEMSLEY, m 1819 in Lewes.

Children:
John (sometimes referred to as Emsley, rather than Hemsley, b 1819 Lewes)
Mary Anne (b 1824 Brighton
James (b 1826 Brighton, wife= Ann, daughter = Eliza or Elizabeth)

John snr and jnr lived in Brighton from 1841 to at least 1881 in area around Gloucester Place.

Does anyone know which line of Hemsleys they came from? I can't find any records for James in Buxted, save for one born 1770 (his father perhaps?).

Any info gratefully received.
