I have to take issue with Linda. Crayford was a silk and calico printing centre and hence he would have been printing waistcoats. There were also mills on the Wandle and Lea.

The apprenticeship records largely finish by around 1790 and as James would have been about 14 at apprenticeship he is unlikely to be on the inland revenue tax records.

I have been trying to make a database of calico printers and agree that James appears in 1810 in a baptism and dies 1846. John Buck b 1785 is also recorded as a waistcoat printer but he too died 1848.

John Troubridge is shown following his father under apprenticeship.

All of which gains us nothing.

Try settlement, bastardy and removal info for Surrey and Kent with all spellings of Trowbridge
Examine the Windlesham family and follow all the children - you might find a daughter who follows the same route. In particular do your best to reach burial in each case.

Unfortunately there is no useful available info for Crayford.

This James TROWBRIDGE (1783-1846) looks right to me. Bt Windlesham 13 July 1783. Parents (according to Ancestry tree) were John TROWBRIDGE (1752-1835) and Ann CLARK (1747-1843).

Burial of Ann TROWBRIDGE on 16 Jan 1843 in Windlesham. She was living at Bagshot, and aged 96.

Names of possible parents of James John/Ann) seem to fit well with actual names of children of James. Lots of TROWBRIDGEs in West Country so perhaps eventually you will trace ancestors back to Trwobridge area

Waistcoat? Surely you mean wainscot (an area of wooden - especially oaken - panelling on the lower part of a room’s walls.) He would undoubtedly have served an apprenticeship so why do't you search for that in the records?

Yes I've seen a copy of the marriage register on Cityark. He was a Waistcoat Printer
Witnesses were John Buck and Harriet Rayment, doesn't seen to be any clues there

His name was James Trowbridge born c1783 married Sarah Ann Eaglestone in Sutton at Hone Kent in 1809

Children all baptised in Crayford.

He is on 1841 census living in Crayford, Kent. Sarah seems to have died and he is with the children them he dies in 1846 in Crayford informant, very hard to read, looks like Mary Bunforth but I can't find her on census.

It's where he was born that I am having difficulty with

The 1841 census for where? Kent?
If you have found that he was born in 1783, that he married in 1809 (Kent), and that he died in 1846, why not try Kent county/parish records first?
If you have the (maiden) name of his wife, you may be able to locate baptisms of children, and since he married in Kent, I'd try Kent.
Do you have his death cert? Who was the informant? His wife or a child of his?

Look in the bright side,

you now know your looking out of that county

Don'f forget, born 1783? ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 for adults in the 1841

Well only because you have not entered any family names ; there are many people on these boards who could soon provide some clues if you added names to your dates and c1841 current residence.

All c1841 records do not give birth location beyond born in county / out of county. County lines are as in 1841 when great chunks of London were in Middlesex, Essex and Surrey.

For most people it is possible to trace one or more branches back to about 1700 and quite often to the mid C16.

GGGGrandfather born 1783 married in 1809 in Kent. On 1841 census 'not born in County' died in 1846. Well that's that then!!!!
