The 1881 census gives a Charles an Mary A Carter living 28 Paradise Place Islington, now have a Eliza 12, George 9 John 6 Fred 4.
There is a death for an Elizabeth 14 1884 Strand 1b 420 If this is our Eliza it would allow Elizabeth Mary bn 1887

Helen There are number of Charles Carters listed on Census for Shoreditch (Hoxton Old Town) who may be your man...I dont have access to census but you can see them listed in the GR Search.

He may not have been reg at birth .it wasn't compulsory till 1875 when it became an offence with a fine for non or late registration

My Nan Elizabeth Mary Carter Bn 23/11/1887 at 42 Popham Rd Islington South East, Married Harry Trowbridge 23/12/1906 Christ Church Hoxton living 58 Baring St Father Charles Carter Deceased. Charles Carter married a Mary Ann Lane 25 widow nee Banksband, Father Edward Banksband at St Leonards church Shorditch, 6/5/1867 living 20 Pearson Street, Father John Carter colour maker.
I can't find Charles Carter on Census or birth and death records, can anyone help please
