doing research for relitives in liverpool and ive come across two streets in the city,i would like to find out how close to oneanother these streets were,how do i go about that?

The geeky answer:

E.g., Penny Lane (in Liverpool) - click on hit and you get taken to an URL beginning with

e.g., Beaconsfield Street (in Liverpool) gets
www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=336484&y=388854&z=

The OS coordinates (339037,388259) for the arrow point are emmbedded in the URL
These measure (in metres) the easting (339037) and the northing (388259) from some fixed data point (abt 100km W of Scilly Isles).
339037-336484=2553; 388854-388259=595
So to get from Penny Lane to Beaconsfield Street, I go 2553 m W and 595 m N.
Using Pythagorus 2553^2+595^2=2621.418^2
So 2621 m apart (really that's a bit over-precise)

Suppose I wanted to see an old map of Beaconsfield
Go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html and enter the coords 336484, 388854 then select a map from col at right e.g., 1905 1:2500
(1:2500 refers to scale of printed map here abt 25" to mile - 1:10560 is 6" to mile, a smaller scale - course it's nothing to do with what scale it is on your screen - clearly the same pic on a cell-phone and a stadium screen won't be at the same apparent scale)


As I said, (336484,388854) is a bit over-precise. Rounding down to 100m gets (336400,388800).
There's a newer (Landranger) way to give this coord - replace the first digits (3,3) here by a magic letter pair - SJ here, drop the trailing 00s, and run the rest together to get SJ364888
Streetmap accepts either coord system.

Suppose I go 13km N and 1km W - and look up 335600,401300 (or SD356013) - zoom out to mag step 4.
What I'm guessing at is the location of St Helen's Sefton.
The blue grid lines are 1 km apart.
Note we've got a new pair of first digits (3,4) - so we need new magic letters (SD).

Instead of rounding down to the nearest 100m, suppose we round down to the nearest 1km, to get the ref SD3501.
