Thank you Thelma, I thought I would try both like you say most people weren't educated in those days so dropping an e out of a name isn't that much I suppose. I knew that the marriage cert showed them as being older than most newly weds and therefore matched the timelines so I will send off for the birth certs and see what turns up.
Many thanks once again :-)

I would not worry to much about the E.People were not so educated in those days As to the marriage,they would not be the first to marry after they had children. This is the one that ties in with the marriage.
James Horsfield Birth: abt 1860 - Manchester, Lancashire, England Residence: 1861 - Chorlton upon Medlock, Lancashire, England
And this is the other;
James Horsefield Birth: abt 1860 - Manchester, Lancashire, England Residence: 1861 - Chorlton upon Medlock, Lancashire, England
These should be the births;
James Horsefield Birth: Jun 1860 - Chorlton, Lancashire
James Horsfield Birth: Mar 1860 - Chorlton, Lancashire

Hi all thank you for replying.
I found Alice & James on the 1911 census but they are noted as married 20 odd years but the marriage cert for James Horsefield & Alice Metcalf (Alise on census) is dated 1901 given that my great grandad (Sidney) was born in 1881 I am confused as to whether it is the correct James & Alice.
On the marriage cert for James 41 & Alice 38 they are older & list their parents as James Horsefield (baker, deceased) & John Metcalf (plumber, deceased). The ages are old to be married but back in 1881 my great granddad was Horsfield according to his birth cert?
Sorry if this is not helping but I am stumped as to which James is correct because 2 were born in 1860 in chorlton on medlock one with an e and one without? I can see in 1891 census the e is added to James ( head), Alice (wife), Sidney 9, James (son) 7? & all the ages work out right but I don't want to follow the wrong line? on one census it says Alice born in Liverpool & the next one Manchester.
For all of you that have replied could I ask your opinion please, if you were me which James would you follow?
Kind regards
Kathy

Hi I am having difficulty in finding the correct James Horsfield/Horsfield born in 1860, Chorlton, Manchester. There are two born in Cholrton in 1860 but one has an "e" in the surname and one doesn't?
The problem is that according to my Gr Grandad's birth cert his father is James Horsfield (without an E) & his mother is Alice (nee Metcalf). The only marriage cert I can find is Horsefield & Metcalf is in 1901 and that has an "E" . According to the census records in 1891, 1901 & 1911 the family have an E in the name but my Gr Grandad seems to have dropped it somewhere along the line ? Any help is very welcome because I don't want to follow the wrong line.
Kind regards
Kathy
