I have now found three census entries one says Halnburg one says Nationalised British Subject and one says Hamburg, all written very clearly, rumours are that this relative came from Poland though, confused, I am. :-( |

Sorry to state the obvious Heather, but have you looked at the image yourself in case the transcriber has made an error? |

Thats what I thought it might be a mistranscription but it seems a daunting task trying to research some one from Germany, or Poland or Austria as each country has a place with just one letter difference from Halnburg :-( |

Maybe its a mistranscription sounds more like it should be Hamburg |

One of my relatives has come up on several census forms as coming from abroad, on one it says they are a Nationalised British Subject on another it says they come from Halnburg. I have looked on many maps trying to find Halnburg but am having no luck at the moment, could it be the place name has changed since 1827 if so does anyone know what or where it would have been? On one form it says Hamburg so is Halnburg and Hamburg the same place? Help please somebody I am really stuck? |
