You may find some information here:-

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/research-guides/change-of-name.htm

Are you sure they changed their name by deed poll? They could have just started using a different name without doing it officially as long as it wasn't for fraudulent reasons.

most people did not bother changing their name by Deed Poll ............ it cost too much money!

It was quite sufficient just to declare that your name would such-and-such from a certain date ................. as long as you were not changing your name for a nefarious reason.

Hi Bernard
I have family who changed their name by deed poll in 1933
Lucky for me i have been given a copy of the documents that were kept in the family so i did not have to go hunting.
I have a solicitors document stamped by the supreme court of judicature, central office. enrolment department. all signed and witnessed. It lists the whole family who changed their names and their address.
I also have the page out of The London Gazette which has a published statement to the change of name. And another clipping which looks like it may have come from the local news paper.

hope this helps

Hi Bernard,

You could try searching the London Gazette Archives online for your relative in case s/he did the same as Jeannie'a relative and published his/her change of name there.
