Thinking of having a DNA TEST just out of interest to see where my ancestors came from. Has anyone had one who can pass on some advice please , as to which is the best to go for and was it in their view worth the money? Thank You.

Why do you think DNA will give accurate info about your ancestry?

Would you believe what you were told.......regardless?

I'm just curious................

I think the query refers to finding out what area of the world your ancestors came from. I had this done for me (as a present) some years ago and it seems I come from the tribe that came out of Africa and up the west side of Europe en route to the British Isles. It doesn't really help much in practical terms at this level but more of a gimmick really. I know I have Scottish (paternal) and East Anglian (maternal) ancestry according to the records back to 1500s.

I don't think I would pay for the "gimmick" sort of DNA testing and I don't know how much it cost or which company did it - sorry!

Useful DNA testing is when you have a person (living) who you think may be related - you can have your DNA compared.

I also used it to eliminate possible ancestors of Afro-American descent using a male relative who volunteered his DNA sample (and paid the bill!) That was in the order of £160-00. It saved us going down the wrong route.

We all came out of Africa - the difference then is where they went from there.

Edit: Another question this raises is how do people like the BNP and White Supremecists (?) cope with this fact? It must make their brains melt......
