Thank you for keeping my thread on your mind.
I'm afraid I havn't gotten any closer to linking my Loffills with the Staffordshire set.

The first Loffill I have is Joseph Loffill my 6x grandfather who marries Mary Blackemore St George the Martyr, England in 1773

I can't find any records for Joseph before this date. He dies in St Mary Woolnoth, London, England in 1777. Thats all I have for him.

The couples son Joseph is born 1777 the year his father dies in St Mary Woolnoth, London, England. His occupation is Blacksmith. He marries Margaret Hollingan in St Saviours, Southwark, Surrey 1800.

The couple have four daughter's and two sons. One son dies in childhood and the other son Joseph dies in 1836 without having married. That is where my Loffill line ends.

The only other Loffill I can find in London around that time is a Stephen Loffill.

birth of Josepha Mary Ann Loffill born 3 May 1826, her father Stephen Loffill his wife Elizabeth.

As the daughter of this couple is baptised Josepha, I am wondering if these people might be relatives of my Loffills?

I havn't really been that succesful in finding out.

Was wondering if you had managed to find any link to the Staffordshire Loffills. I am descended from Annie Loffill born Staffordshire

According to this site, which I have found quite accurate on previous searches, the name Loffill is found mainly in Spain (Canary Isles) and UK. In England the top area is Yorkshire and Humberside, but the top city is Stoke on Trent, which used to be Staffordshire.

I've already tried google.
The information given was sketchy and the last quote
"Elizabeth Weston Loffill, the daughter of Joseph Loffill, christened at St Mary Woolnoth, in the city of London, on June 5th 1805"

Is my family.

I was rather hoping that some one would actually know the surname already.
Otherwise I need to find out how to start to research back to the 17th century and then go forward in time again

Does any one have any idea of where the surname Loffill comes from please?


The earliest use of it I can find in relation to my family is in 1773 ,Queens Square St George the Martyr, Middlesex,England
Marriage of Joseph Loffill and Mary Blackemore.

No trace of Joseph before this date.

I have noticed that other Loffill families come from the Staffordshire area but I can't link mine to them at this point.

I'm stumped and have no idea of how to proceed.
I already have the details of Joseph and Mary's ( I know!) son Joseph and his family,but nothing at all on Joseph senior prior to his marriage that could give a clue as the his origins.

Joseph senior dies in 1777 the year his son is born and his widow remarries a Joseph Bond.

Any thoughts or advice on how to move forward with this would be a great help.
