One of my relatives was described on a census return as an "inmate" at the age of 10. It turned out his father was in the workhouse and he was enrolled at the school linked to it. The addresses were different on the census returns, one being for the address of the actual workhouse and the other for the address of the school.

I found workhouse records at our local main records Office for late 1890 onwards. They arent online still but had to be looked at on microfiche and then copied off

Does David actually know which Institution is was?

"I only have a name & reference number "

Does that mean the name of the Institution, or the name of the relative?

Despite being a new poster, we must hope that David can find his way back to and post on the thread

If it was a workhouse, this site might give some information about where its records are held.

Which site did you find the census on? Although this site doesn't necessarily show the name of the institution on the transcription, others might.

If you care to copy the transcription, or give us details to find your relative ourselves, we may be able to find them on other sites, and give guidance about obtaining their records.

An alternative, if the site allows you, is to view the previous pages until you get to the summary page at the front. Most places like hospitals, work houses or Industrial or orphange schools could have a number of pages to list the residents, with the front sheet giving the address and name of the institution

EDIT - just noticed that this is your first post. Welcome to the Boards :-)
