What other websites would you recommend ?

Jean Report 20 Oct 2012 10:49

Hi all ,
I have come to a complete standstill on my family tree and was wondering if any members could recommend any other websites to look at .
Most if not all of my family were born in Scotland and a few in Ireland so most of my searching has been on Scotlandspeople , I also have limited access to Ancestry but I still cannot find the people I am looking for.
I am wondering about Find my past , has anyone used it and if so is it expensive and what sort of records would I be able to view ?
thanks
jean

Look at FMP's home page and find out what they offer........and what their charges are

I imagine you're familiar with the LDS site?

Who are you looking for? What info are you trying to find?

Malcolm Report 21 Oct 2012 20:32

I am in a similar position Jean. I can afford a sub to some of the other sites such as FMP but I wonder how much use they will be to me.

After working with SP i'm reluctant to trust the Mormon (IGI /Family search) sites as i've seen so many bad transcripions. Obviously they're good for guidance but I wouldn't want them as a main source.

FreeBMD is only England and Wales so no good to us.

I've just heard about "TalkingScot" a long established site which i'm investigating as a possible lead for guidance on where to go next.

5 days at Edinburgh next month! ;-)

Freereg.org.uk has some transcribed Scottish parish records. The link below lists the coverage by County and then parish

http://www.freereg.org.uk/parishes/index.shtml#scotland

http://www.cyndislist.com/categories/#s
is a good portal – Scotland is listed under the United Kingdom & Ireland heading

Although it has developed into a look-up thread, a large number of Irish resources are listed amongst the pages.

Thank you to everyone ,

So sorry for the delay in replying but laptop just gave up the ghost , it's pretty old , just like me , and has taken all weekend for my son to sort it out, hopefully it will last a little while longer.

I have looked at the LDS site , but not much luck with it , I will take a look at all the others , hopefully turn up something .

Reggie,
The people I am looking for are my grandad's brothers, Henry Moore b c 1859 and Alexander Moore b 1880 both in Glasgow. No sign after 1881 for Henry and 1891 for Alexander .

Thanks once again
jean

You are so right Quoy...what a fantastic resource. I've already spent over an hour trawling through those documents...Testaments especially... and have downloaded several. I recognise some of the references from my membership of the National Library of Scotland but as I live abroad this is a way to access some which I can't get online from NLS.

Thanks again.

Hello Jean. So Henry and Alexander are still eluding you?

There is a Dunlop tree on Ancestry with some of your Moore family on it. Is it your tree please? There certainly aren't any death dates on it for either of the boys.

There is another tree with an Alexander Moore photograph with the following text attached to it.

Photo: moore2
Category: Portrait
Description: Left home to join Scottish Regiment (Black Watch?) Possibly taken during S. African Boer war?
Attached To: Alexander Moore (1881-1945)

It was a while ago that we looked at the poor relief records, did we look for Henry and Alexander on them? I just can't remember at the minute (old age catching up with me!)

Hope you and the family are all well.

Kindest Regards

Jean

Hello Rootgatherer,
Thank you for replying ,
Yes,I am back on the trail of my grandad's 2 brothers , no sign of them in Canada where one of the sisters went in 1911 or as far as I can see no sign of them in the U.S.
I think i have just about looked everywhere I can think of.
I must admit I have not done any research for a while , moved house and new granson so I have had good excuses, but I have got the bug again and am raring to go .
I can't remember if you helped look for them on the poor relief records, I know you did with my Gr.gran Margaret nee Stewart and her gr.gran Anne nee Oliphant .

If you remember the inspector visited Margaret Moore nee Stewart , in I think 1911 and listed the sons including Alexander asking " where were they " ? but he did not mention Henry .

I have not seen the tree on Ancestry with Alexander Moore and photograph, I will take a look .

I do know the Dunlop tree we have been in contact , but she knows no more than me about Alexander.

My problem is I don't live in Glasgow as you know so have to rely on lovely people like you to help, otherwise I am spending loads on Scotlands people, although i wouldn't mind if i could find them,

Family are all well, thank you, hope yours are too,
regards
jean

jean

Just found the tree you mentioned, unfortunately not my Alexander .
