Social Security Death Index Name: Duncan Howlett Last Residence: 04016 Center Lovell, Oxford, Maine, United States of America Born: 15 May 1906 Died: 19 May 2003 State (Year) SSN issued: Massachusetts (1955-1956) The Rev. Dr. Duncan Howlett, minister, author, and more recently, forrester, died on Monday, May 19, 2003. He was 97 years of age.
Howlett was born on May 15, 1906, in Newton, Massachusetts. He received the SB. degree from Harvard in 1928, the LLB. Degree in 1931, and in the same year he was admitted to the Massachusetts Bar. Following the practice of law for two years, he returned to Harvard to study religion in 1933, and was awarded the STB degree with honors in 1936, while serving as Minister of the Second Church, Unitarian, in Salem, Massachusetts. Dr. Howlett was ordained to the Unitarian ministry in Salem, Massachusetts, November 17,1935 and served in Salem until 1938. He served at First Unitarian Church, New Bedford, Massachusetts (1938-1946), and then moved to First Church in Boston, Unitarian, where he served for the next twelve years.
In 1958, Howlett was called to All Souls Church, Unitarian, in Washington, D.C., the position from which he retired in 1968. In May of that year he was appointed to Hubert Humphrey's presidential campaign staff. In addition to his concern with public affairs during the entire range of his ministry, Howlett played an active role in Unitarian denominational affairs. Among the various committees and boards on which he served were those of Beacon Press, the Unitarian Historical Library, and the Christian Register (the denominational publication of its day). He was President of the Unitarian Historical Society; Chairman of the Washington Advisory Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Association Department of Social Responsibility; Chairman, D.C. Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights; served on the Executive Committee of the Washington Home Rule Commission; and was active with the Washington Urban Institute.
Duncan Howlett authored these books: "Man Against the Church"; "The Struggle Between Religion and Ecclesiasticism"; "The Essenes and Christianity"; "An Interpretation of the Dead Sea Scrolls"; "The Fourth American Faith"; "No Greater Love: The James Reeb Story"; "The Critical Way in Religion"; and "The Fatal Flaw at the Heart of Religious Liberalism".
On retiring from the active parish ministry in 1968, Howlett became deeply involved in the environmental movement, particularly in the area of forestry. In Maine he organized and was the first President of the Small Woodland Owners Association (SWOAM). The conservation of natural resources emphasizing the responsible management of woodland on the part of citizen forest owners became for him a "second career." Howlett is survived by his wife, Carolyn Chance Howlett; his children, Susan<<<is this Margaret? Hasty of Portland, Maine; Albert Howlett of Falls Church, Virginia; Richard Howlett of Burke, Virginia; and Carolyn H. Korth of Center Lovell, Maine. Yes, Susan is ineed Margaret as it states here
Lewiston Sun Journal 5/30/03 Founder of woodlot organization dies By Gail Geraghty Staff Writer Duncan Howlett, founder of the Small Woodland Owners Association of Maine, died May 19 at age 97.A minister, doctor of philosophy, author and social justice activist during the 1960s, Howlett died satisfied he had accomplished all he wanted to accomplish in life, his granddaughter, Carrie Korth, said Thursday."It was his time. He held on long enough to see my brother and I come home from college," she said.Korth said her grandfather, who remained active up until the end, was especially pleased her family planned to preserve the 900-acre "forest park" he created over the years by buying up contiguous lots around his Eastman Hill Road farmhouse."Grampa's left behind a huge legacy, and it's definitely something we want to continue," said Korth, whose brother, William, is majoring in forestry and wildlife ecology at the University of Maine.Korth's mother, Lynn, who lives across the street from Howlett, has owned all the land for several years. The farm and around 35 acres have been passed on to Howlett's wife, Carolyn, a resident of the Fryeburg Health Center for the past eight years.A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. June 7 at the family home, once the old Town Farm, which the Howletts purchased 35 years ago after Howlett retired from a career as a Unitarian minister at the All Souls Church in Washington, D.C.At a January talk at the local Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library about his 1966 book, "No Greater Love: The James Reeb Story," Howlett said it was still painful for him to recall how Reeb, his assistant minister, was killed by white extremists after a civil rights march in Selma, Ala.In those years highlights of his sermons were reported regularly in the Washington Post, which often sent a reporter to cover them. He served as chairman of the D.C. Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and served on the executive committee of the Washington Home Rule Committee. He led his parishioners down 16th Street to join in the March on Washington on Aug. 28, 1963.Prior to coming to All Souls Church, he served Unitarian congregations in Salem, New Bedford and Boston, Mass.He continued his writing and occasional preaching until the end of his life.He was working on a sermon titled "Can Democracy Survive in the Age of Terrorism?"He amassed a large personal library, which he donated to several universities. In the summer of 1939, with the Unitarian Service Committee, he assisted refugees fleeing from Poland.Howlett founded SWOAM in 1976 and was its first president.Paris resident Al Soule, a good friend of Howlett's during those early SWOAM days, recalled Howlett as a "real sharp guy" who was a forward thinker, always one step ahead in supervising the organization's growth and vision."He made it a real unit of woodland owners," said Soule. Just five years ago, at a 25th anniversary gathering of SWOAM members at his home, "Duncan fired everybody up again" about the importance of responsible woodlot ownership to the future of the Maine woods."He always said we need to leave our land better than we found it," Soule said.Korth said her brother plans to introduce more wildlife into Howlett's land. Korth is majoring in business, and hopes to help her parents manage aspects of the woodlot business.Howlett was born in Newton, Mass. He was a graduate of Harvard University, Harvard Law School, and Harvard Divinity School with honors. He received honorary doctorate degrees from Emerson College in 1957 in Boston, Mass., and Meadville Theological Seminary at the University of Chicago in 1958.
Besides his wife and daughter Carolyn, Howlett is survived by another daughter, Margaret (Susan) Howlett Hasty of Portland; two sons, Albert Howlett of Falls Church, Va., and Richard Howlett of Burke, Va.; a sister, Edith Helen Howlett of Quincy, Mass.; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.Memorial contributions may be made to the Duncan Howlett Fund, SWOAM, 153 Hospital St., P.O. Box 836, Augusta, ME 04332. http://www.sunjournal.com/story.asp?slg=053003dunkan
