Thank you all who reponded to my question
I have been looking for John Steele B approx 1820 for a long time. He worked in Leslie Fife and had 2 sons there. The boys were raisedby a kind woman in Inverkeithing Fife and the parish funded their keep and schooling. One of the boys (john Steele) was my great grand father. I cannot find out what happened to the other son James born 1843 Leslie.
Both parents seemed to have dissappeared between 1845 and 1851 census.

Thanks again

http://www.freecen.org.uk/ has transcribed 1841 & 1851 for Fife.
However, in 1841, 14 of the 61 parishes are missing (incl Leslie).
Also, there is no CofS burial register for Leslie for 1838-1854.

One can get an 1890s map of Fife (indeed, any Scottish county) showing parishes at:
http://www.electricscotland.com/history/gazetteer/
It's fine at the county scale, but at the parish scale, we need more detail. I think there's a site that overlays parishes on OS maps, but I can't find the one I want.
However, http://crtb.sedsh.gov.uk/landreformp/viewer.htm is usable.
Click on a Leslie guess - maybe reset scale at lower left and click again.
You can remove the post code layer, and add the parish layer - the entire parish will fit in at 1:30000 centred on S edge of Balgillie Reservoir.

Their centre is based in the Public Library at Wellesy Road, Methil. They have some newspaper resources on film and a wealth of books which they have collected. I have their "Pre 1855 Death Index" CD whcih is very useful. I have just joined them and will be at the centre in the next two weeks. PM me if I can do any lookups for you.

Jack - have a look at "Talking Scot" (easy to find on google)

It's a free site, but you have to register to post on the forums.

You'll find lots of links to useful places, and if you can't find what you're looking for, post a message & someone is sure to respond.

:-)
