My Gt Gt Grandfather who lived in Halesowen in the Midlands lists his occupation in the 1841 census as being a "Gleed merchant" does anyone know what a Gleed merchant was or what they did? |

What is his name so we can have a look at the census record ourselves. I have never heard of a Gleed Merchant. Could the word be Seed? |

Thanks for replies, it was in the 1851 census not 1841, anyway his name was Daniel Crumpton, born 1801 in Halesowen. As far as I can find out a "Gleed" is a glowing ember of coal but what a "Gleed merchant" was or did I do not have a clue! |

1841 looks like Nailor for occupation |

I thought about that myself but why not just call himself a coal merchant? |

Terence, I can't see the census you mean - I can only see Daniel Crumpton nailer in 1851. Who was he living with? |

His name may be transcribed as Daniel Crampton but he was living with his wife Jane (aged 60) and John Price (28) and Jane Price (26) in "Hagley Road, Hasbury, Halesowen".I have used Ancestry site. |

Daniel Crumpton is a Nailer in the 1841 census - a "Gleed Merchant" in the 1851 census and a Horse Carter in the 1861 census. |

viewing the original image, it would appear the occupation was cleed merchant; unless the persons name was Daniel Grumpton. Cleed (also spelt clead) was a type of cloth. ;-) |
