Dear All,

First the background.
I have dabbled in family trees for a while trying to following my family back (first tried 25 years ago at Hertford records, finding online much easier). My sister got us back to 1833 and for a while we were stuck. Recently I was contacted via Facebook by a person with the same name as me. He indicated that his family orginated in Aylesbury and asked if we could be related. Well, in 1833 our ancestor was in Tring which is quite close so my interest was reawakened. I managed to trace my tree further back to about 1750 and, with some help, his back to 1791 at which time my ancestors were living in lower winchedon and his in stone - both in Aylesbury. These turn out to be about 4 miles apart :-D . I therefore feel we must have connected trees and am eager to try and confirm it.

I have used FamilySearch, FreeBMD, Findmypast and Genes Reunited of course - but In case it is important I confirm I only have a subscription to Genes Reunited.

So to the Question
I seem to have hit a bit of a wall at 1790 ish, I do not seem to be able to find any records before this. In some of the trees shared with me they seem to have found details back beyond this. Can anyone give me advice how they would find information before this time - in particular tie people together.

Any information would be appreciated.

Hello Brian, it's quite likely that those people have sat and trawled through actual parish records. Sadly not all info is on-line.

Ok, makes sense.

I have looked in www.bucksfhs.org.uk and found we can buy CD's.
Just need to be sure to get the right one I suppose.

Before you buy CDs have a look at the above. I'm not sure how far you can get before they want a sub. but it's worth a try.

The search list seems to start in 1800's

As Stone and Lower Winchendon both seem to be near Aylesbury I am going to have to try the Aylesbury CD first I think. Shame can't get a Buckinghamshire CD!

A year or so back I used their Search service to obtain reports on my HAKES ancestors. Separate searches for Births and Marriages.

You should be able to get a report by Parish for a Surname (including varient spellings) of the transcribed details for any 100 year period. It cost me just £3 per hundred years.
It was fast and for me, it was well worth the money.

Have you tried the record office for that county/ district ?

for this you will need to pay search fees, but its well worth it if you have particular years in mind/

And dont forget there MAY be a will or two for relatives, that will connect the family members.

and there may be mention in papers at the national archives.

if any of your relatives were clergy then try the CCED. online free lookups.

Jeremy, I am looking at Bucks FHS, thats where I was considering getting the CD from but the search you suggest seems to make more sense.

Quoy, you have got to love the online books - so far the volumes available do not seem to include either Nether Winchendon or Stone, but really nice.
