I have full details of my great grandmother from birth to death, but am unable to locate her in the 1871 census.

Birth in 1851 of Mary Mawdsley in Kirkby, Lancashire

1861 census, in Kirkby, Lancashire

marriage to John Roberts in West Derby


Unable to find the birth of their daughter Mary Ellen about 1870 as the name is so common.

Unable to find the family in 1871 census. They would have been living in the Bootle area

In the 1881 census, Mary is recorded as "wife" but John is not about. John was a Joiner, so he could have been away from the house at the time of the census. But again, as the name is so common, can`t find him.

In 1891 census, Mary has married her lodger, George Massie.

Any idea what permutations of the name Roberts I could use?

There is a Mary Mawdsley living in Manchester in 1871 who is recorded as having been born in 1851.
Is it possible she married after the 1871 census?
Given her age at the time of the 1871 census, I don't think she could have married before then. Wasn't the age of consent 21 back then?
I haven't yet seen anybody having married in the 19th century whilst still in their teens.

The family living at 23 Cambden Street in 1871 with father John appear to have been living in 49 Copeland Street in 1869 with this being their daughter Edith and John again being a joiner

If that is Mary Ellen in 1881 census, then she would have been born before her parents' marriage.
Kathlyn said she was born about 1870, not 1867/1868
I think we need Kathlyn to post the 1861 and 1881 censuses, and any more information about birth dates and any other children.
