can any one tell me why they calledit walsall foreign on the census sheets thanks!

7. What Was Walsall Like Then?
At the beginning of the 18th century, Walsall was a small town and “Walsall Foreign” stretched up through Bloxwich. The boundaries of the borough today would have been parts of South Staffordshire. There was a big divide between rich and poor, which dictated the way people were treated.

Just the terminology of the times...............I would suggest that 'suburbs' or similar would be the current equivalent

BUT...........the County Records Office may have more detailed info.......check with them

A few years ago I raised the same question with the then Mayor of Walsall, Councillor Mike Bird who I knew well as we were then both members of the same Clay Target shooting club. Although a town council member since 1980 he had never come across the term Walsall Foreign until I mentioned it to him.

He kindly got someone at the town hall to look into the matter and they subsequently contacted me with the details which were much the same as the explanation provided via Google. Basically the area covered by the parish church within the town was considered as the borough of Walsall. The adjacent parishes of Bloxwich, Pelsall and Rushall became known as Walsall Foreign. The split dates back to 1627.

Researching:
Don't put off until tomorrow doing what you can do today. If you like doing it today you can do it again tomorrow. Be kind to your children for it is they who will decide which care home you end up in.
