Melissa,

Best if you provide a bit more info., such as:-
- In the UK?
- Is he alive or dead? (from your comments, he is dead)
- His date/year of birth - from his death record if you have it.
- If no DoB, then full name and year of death could help.
- Do you have access to Census & BMD records - either on this site or another?

PM me if you like.

If your grandfather was born in England/Wales, look for his birth on freebmd

That's a FREE site which covers England/Wales from 1837 to abt 1950

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

If he was born after 1911, his mother's maiden name will show on the index..........this info will enable you to look for any siblings he may have had..................hopefully, the names are not too common, which will make the search easier.

You don't need to have relatives to ask to research your FH...................I didn't have any to ask when I started trying to trace my antecedents.

For some reason on here the Mothers Maiden Name is blank :(

Inky1

Inky1 Report 31 Dec 2012 16:42

Mother's maiden name is Hill.
Only one other in Sculcoates RD

Caroline Hill 1920Q1

patchem Report 31 Dec 2012 16:54

He will not show in any census as they are only available up to 1911.
You will probably need to buy that birth certificate to find out his parents' names, as there is no obvious local marriage for Brooker/Hill.

I cant seem to find her on the births for 1920, was that death?

patchem Report 31 Dec 2012 17:40

On this website;
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
if you put in searching for births from 1915 to 1925 with surname Brooker, mother's maiden name Hill, you should find Caroline born in 1920, Sculcoates.
You will get other Brooker/Hill births, but only 2 for Sculcoates.

Thats great thank you. I didnt realise it would be so hard to start off with, ive got plenty done its just the older ones which are the hardest :)

It's a pity you didn't seek advice before taking out GR's platinum..............nearly everyone has only the basic membership, and uses other sites for research.

Follow the advice given by myself and others......use freebmd

And bear in mind that the last available census is 1911.

You'll have to use bmd info to enable you to get back that far............

ErikaH Report 31 Dec 2012 18:16

If you can't find a Brooker/Hill marriage, consider that the mother may have been married before, and lost her husband......possibly in WW1

Your best bet, really, is to invest in your grandfather's birth cert. It will give you the facts about his parents.

Following on from Reggie, you need the birth certificate, but for speculation:

Marriages Jun 1913
Hill Edith Howes Hull 9d 480
Howes Joseph D Hill Hull 9d 480

Marriages Mar 1916
Brooker William H Howes Sculcoates 9d 253
Howes Edith Brooker Sculcoates 9d 253

I cannot see a death for Joseph D Howes, but it could be overseas war death.

This man:
Births Dec 1882
Howes Joseph Daniel Royston 3a 417
is in Hull in 1911 census, fisherman, single.

I will certainly be doing that. Thank you so much for your help, ive struggled with the other sites and just finding stuff thats relevant. So many people with the same names :)

Hi Melissa, it's nearly always necessary to buy some certificates along the way to find out the correct parents, etc - otherwise you could easily follow the wrong path.

Best place to get your certificates is direct from GRO http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ they cost £9.25

Melissa

Melissa Report 31 Dec 2012 19:23

I think ill go to the History centre in Hull and see what i can also find there. I will have to get some certificates ordered. The census is brilliant when you can find who your looking for! :)

Usually, the most convenient and cheapest way of getting English BMD certs is to order online from the GRO:
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
The price is 9.25 GBP, incl postage for the cert which will be mailed to you in a week or so.
