All the Foulis family that you have listed Fairy Godmother is my family, Alexander Anderson Foulis was my grandfather and his many siblings, 1 of which is still alive today. I can account for most of the middle names given and have spoken with the surviving sibling, he can recite all the names but cannot remember where Gilmour came from.
I am back to 1675 in the Foulis line and the 1700´s for the mother of Robert Gilmour Foulis born 1877, I hope to find it one day.
Reggie - thank you for your information, I have charts copied from the Scottish Library in Edinburgh of my greater family back to 1490 and in the days of James IV of Scotland. My direct descendants all came from St Andrews and surrounding areas of Fife, but the noblemen were mainly in Edinburgh still looking for the link to St Andrews, although there was a William De Foulis who was archdeacon in St Andrews in 1432.

A name like yours can be a family surname sometime in the past. I have a simalar occurance in my tree that noone knew the origin of until I traced it back 6 generations.
So keep tracing back and you may find it somewhere.

Welcome to the boards Yvonne. It seems this is a Scotish enquiry.

My father´s name is Robert Gilmour Foulis, I can see when the name Gilmour was added into the family name back in 1877 but cannot find where it came from. I have researched on both the father and mothers families, especially the mothers ancestors. I have also looked on the birth certificate at the registers name and ministers name as it was suggested to me that sometimes the middle name can come from that person, but no luck there.
I have looked to see if there were families with the surname Gilmour living in the same area but cannot make any connection.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
