Can someone help me please ?? I am stuck on my wife`s side of the tree. All I have is John Handel b.1833 in Germany This appears on the 1881 census and he was stated as being a Master Baker in East London. What i need to find out is when and why he came to the UK and how to find his birth certificate. Any suggestions would be appreciated Meanwhile Best regards Trevor Mitchell in sunny Queenslan :-(

I can't see John on the 1851 so possibly he came here after that ?

I've not used these websites personally, but a quick google "looking for german ancestry" brought up several. A quick glance at these few looked promising (for background info if nothing else). http://www.germanroots.com/germanlinks.html http://genealogy.about.com/od/germany/a/basics.htm http://www.findmygermanancestors.com/
You may never find the actual reason for your ancestors coming to Britain, but you can speculate...they would have been amongst several thousands of eastern Europeans who fled their own country for (mainly) USA and UK during the 1800's. Immigration to UK is nothing new, but particularly during this time it was on a huge scale. The most common reasons were all or any of the following - they were extremely poor, had no work, no prospects, war, civil war, revolution, collapsed economy, persecution etc and, naturally, they would be attracted to a country which appeared to have more to offer, ie peace, work, a better standard of living, better conditions, etc. In fact, when you think about it, for much the same reasons, though without the desperation, why people, in more recent times, went to Australia (I'm thinking £10 poms for example).

Alien passenger immigration shows a Johannes Handel, a Baker, arriving 25 May 1854, London. Port of departure: Rotterdam Netherlands. Ship: Fyenoord. Country of Origin: Hotzelfingen ....which I think is mistranscribed, it should read HOLzelfingen with an L not a T.
Found this by googling..............
Holzelfingen Geographic coordinates 48° 25' 30" North, 9° 16' 35" West
Current time in Holzelfingen 11:02:17
Holzelfingen is a small village in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, Europe. We bring you detailed map of Holzelfingen with satellite images from multiple providers like Google, Bing or OpenStreetmap.
EDIT NOTE: Holzelfingen is near the towns of Lichtenstein and St Johann in S Germany (c50km s of Stuttgart), not to be confused with Liechtenstein the tiny country south of Germany, nestled between Austria and Switzerland :-).
