This is a very useful resource, but it does have one serious drawback - it's not indexed on-site.

So how does one do a lookup - well, I do the lookup first at FS:
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list#page=1®ion=UNITED_STATES

Some years (1850/70, 1900/40) FS provide a free image - just click on link on left-hand side of page.

So lets do a worked example of how to use this index - I'm looking for this guy:

Births Mar 1859 (>99%)
LOTT Adolphus Lawrence Greenwich 1d 639

In 1861, he's in England with his dad (Adolphus) rg9/1452/48/34-49/35
He emigrates to ME in the late 1860s.
1870 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M6D6-FD1

By 1880, they've moved to Dallas TX
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MFNS-XVG

Now the key bits of the FS transcription are:
event place: Dallas, Texas, United States
nara film number : T9-1299
gs film number : 1255299
image number: 00300
[What we will need is the NARA reel #, but note the LDS film # has the same last 3 digits as the NARA reel # - some years the don't give both]

Now go to http://archive.org/details/1880_census and click on Texas, then click on reel 1299 - Dallas must have been a village back then, as the whole of Dallas Co doesn't fill a reel - it's shared with 2 other counties. (Tarrant Co - where Ft Worth is - shares the reel with 4 other counties.)

Next click on "read online" to get to:
http://archive.org/stream/10thcensus1299unit#page/n0/mode/2up

Edit this URL (changing the page # and the upness) to:
http://archive.org/stream/10thcensus1299unit#page/n300/mode/1up
(the page # was gotten from the image # in the key info above)

Next pick a unique-ish name on the page that you think will have been transcribed accurately, e.g., Elizabeth Hart on Line 23 a=20 or 21 - and look this up on FS. You might specify her county/state of residence as Dallas TX
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MFNS-QLX
Her key info is:
nara film number : T9-1299
gs film number : 1255299
image number: 00303

so we just need to click back 3 pages for our Adolph (Line 30):
http://archive.org/stream/10thcensus1299unit#page/n297/mode/1up

Just a word of warning - the slider bar at right is hyper-sensitive, so never use it, not even click on it.
Use the page clicker at bottom right, by the magnifier - you can scroll around the page with the grabby-mouse thingy.
Also, magnify at least 4 clicks before you save the image - lesser clicks save files of lesser resolution.

1910 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MKXQ-ZFH
http://archive.org/stream/13thcensus1910po317unit#page/n344/mode/1up

1920 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MJC7-ZD8
http://archive.org/stream/14thcensusofpopu400unit#page/n419/mode/1up

1930 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XS1L-BRF
http://archive.org/stream/illinoiscensus00reel549#page/n551/mode/1up

Adolph d 13/1/1933; Merle d 31/8/1934; haven't found Cora, so here's Alfred:
1940 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/KWC5-34L

I've included the 1910 image, but it's a bit too geeky to explain getting that one.
