Can anyone recommend a good family tree software product to put my tree information from GR on to. Ideally, I'd like to export all information on my GR tree on to this standalone family tree product........any suggestions pleae.

Family Tree Maker seems to be the most popular.

Search the web as there are usually some good deals available which can also include bundled membership to Ancestry.co.uk

I've never tried to transfer data in a Gedcom file but it looks like you will lose any photos you have on your Genes tree. This is what Genes have to say:-

Exporting a GEDCOM family tree file is easy.

To export your family tree as a GEDCOM file, click the button below. Your GEDCOM file will be emailed to you once it has been prepared. This process normally takes 5-10 minutes depending on the size of your tree.

PLEASE NOTE: We are unable to export any records or photos you have attached to your tree. If you export your tree as a GEDCOM file, these attachments will be lost.

Having tried several, I settled on FTM which I have used now for several years.

Yes, you can transfer your GR file but be prepared to do a bit of tidying up as gedcom tfrs are not foolproof.

From then on, I suggest you maintain the definitive version of your tree using your PC tree program, and upload copies to GR and other sites you might use from time to time - not the other way around. Make sure you take regular copies and store them safely.

PS if you do settle on FTM do be aware that the different packages i.e. deluxe, platinum etc relate only to the bundled ancestry subscription not to the tree software itself which is identical for each package. Current software version is FTM 2012 but 2010 / 2011 are worth looking at too as they can be obtained at bargain prices and have virtually the same functionality.

I and several others on here use Familyhistorian. Although it works very easily at the basic level, there are many features which might prove useful as you get into it. Despite using it for many years, I've probably only scratched the surface!

Although there are download versions, I prefer a slightly higher costed CD one as it can then be loaded onto other machines.

Some users like to write programmes which can be downloaded for free to work along side familyhistorian.
