Pretty sure this must be him - death date 2 days difference:

Deaths at sea, 1781-1968 Transcription
First name(s) John
Last name Magee
Gender Male
Birth year 1871
Birth place Co Down - born Kircubbin
Death year 1893
Death date 30 Jan 1893
Age 22
Vessel name Martha C Craig
Departure port -
Series BT 334
Box 0008
Page 11

He was an Able Seaman, died of yellow fever in hospital in Santos.

So the answer as to how he got there and what was he doing is that he was a sailor and was on a ship.

(Answering on here - referred from other thread:

This might be him, but there's no way to know for sure:

John Magee
in the UK, Outward Passenger Lists, 1890-1960
Name: John Magee
Gender: Male
Age: 23
Birth Date: abt 1869
Departure Date: 25 May 1892
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England
Destination Port: New York, USA
Ship Name: Teutonic
Master: P J Irving

EDIT: Actually, I see there are lots of later travel records for a John Magee born c 1870, so the one above probably isn't your John.

Astrid Report 1 Mar 2013 13:20

The death was recorded in a family bible along with the deaths of his two brothers:-
James Magee who died on 18th July 1891 in Portland, Oregon
Willaim Magee who died on the 25th Oct 1891 in Wisconsin

So that is all I know of these three distant relations.

Thank you for taking an interest in this item and I will certainly try the sites suggested.

Thanks again Astrid

The cause of death will be recorded on his death cert.

One assumes his occupation will also be noted.

He was a British citizen, so his death should be among the overseas records on FMP, from where you can get the GRO refs to order the cert

BUT..........how do you know the exact date of death if you don't have the cert?

He would have travelled by ship, but, unless he went after the beginning of 1890, there will not be any on line info

Santos is a port...........perhaps he was on a vessel which was merely docked there at the time he died

The above named was born in Kircubbin Northern Ireland on the 19th October 1869. He died 28th January 1893 in Santos, S. America aged 23. Can anyone help me to find out any further information on how he got to America and where was he working when he died and what did he die of. Any directions would be very welcome (or am I asking too much?).
