I joined GR to download images of the censuses for the Lock Family of Stoke Ash Suffolk. I have downloaded the 1841,1851,1881,1891, 1911. According to GR search they do not exist in the 1861,1871. I know they do as they never left the village .On the 1901 Census the image never appears. Maybe I should have joined FMP or Ancestry. as a pensioner I cannot afford both. Have others found the same

Fredk,

Post some of the family members names, birthplace, birth date ect and I will look for them on alternative sites records in 1861 & 1871 for you.

In 1901 there are 18 people named Lock who were born and still live in Stoke Ash.

If GR has access to the transcription then they must also have access to the original. Here are the image source references. When searching on GR if it is possible enter the reference rather than a persons name.

1861 ref: Source Citation: Class: RG 9; Piece: 1150; Folio: 113; Page: 12

1871 ref: Source Citation: Class: RG10; Piece: 1738; Folio: 30; Page: 5

Update Found out how

Fredk,

As you said in your opening post, perhaps you would have been better served had you signed up to one of the other genealogy sites. Although GR has some very good points it appears that it is not considered to be amongst the best for searching records. On Ancestry for example the census search form allows you to just enter a census reference without inputting a persons name.

Have you considered taking up Ancestry's offer of a free 14 day trial? That might give you time to carry out some further research and if you cancel before the 14 days are up it will not cost you anything.

Thanks for your help The 1871 reference worked but not the 1861
The name had been transcribed as Henry Cock

When the time for renewal comes round, do yourself a favour, and revert to a basic sub with GR.

That will allow you to subscribe to either of the other sites, which are far superior with regard to resources for researching.

I don't think any of the regular 'helpers' on here use GR

Will consider your advice I was originaly a standard member for years and have only just upgraded

Like many on here I have subs to both Ancestry & Findmypast

I like the search and viewing on Ancestry but for printouts the FMP is far superior.

And if you cannot find them on one they will turn up on the other.

And remember when searching: mis-transcriptions abound on all sites.

My family SELL, has been found under Sell, Sall, Soll, Sale etc., and even Lell, Loll, so it sometimes pays to be a bit adventurous with your spelling, and once found amendments can be submitted.

Good luck with all your research

You can access Ancestry for free at most public libraries.

Thanks but I did know this. My main trouble is my age and health limits me in my travels. That is why I updated GR to Platimum

The GR search by census ref doesn't seem to work for the 1861 item.

GR uses the FMP census transcription, so you can use FMP search by census ref to see how they've transcribed the name (that bit's free - but you can't get much detail for free), then look that name (e.g., Jemima Locke) on GR.
Free hit gets:
Piece Folio Page Full name Registration district
RG09/1150 113 12 LOCKE, Jemima Hartismere
etc
