I haven't got ANY known photos of my great great grandfather, Robert Henry Shears (1878-1920) and I haven't got photos of any of his ancestors as well.

How would I find and get a hold of such photos? How would I determine that they are the right ones. I have tried distant relatives and close relatives but there aren't any known photos.

If anyone out here is related to Robert H Shears, please contact me if you have photos and information otherwise, please help.

No idea where you are talking about or if you live in the area but if you can check out the local library to see if they any copies of newspapers and then look for marriages as they sometimes have photos the week after the event

Family friends might have photos...?
My parents had several wedding photos of their friends taken in 1930s who had no relationship link to our family, but luckily we talked about the pictures and who was featured.

I have a photograph of my great grandfather which I never expected to receive. It was given to me by my 2nd cousin, who I had previously never known about or met before starting my family research. She had inherited the family photos held by her great aunt.
Often it is the female line which holds onto the family items.

From that period you may find that there are no photos to be found. My grandfather was born 1881 and died 1957 and as far as we know there are no known photos of him. He actively stayed away from cameras.

I am the same, Kath.

We have no photos at all of my grandfather, born 1886 and died 1957. My mother would love to find one but I don't think it is going to happen........

However, I was lucky to make contact with a relation of my mother's aunt on here and he had a photo of my grandmother when she was 21 with her two sisters - what a find!

My mum had never seen a picture of her mother at that age so I would have to say that it is probably the highlight of my family research.

Hardly anyone will have photos from that era............think about it. Such things are a rarity

I don't have any of my paternal grandparents - my grandmother lived till 1963

If you hope for contact with anyone connected.............be pro-active. Look in 'search all trees'.................assuming you know where the man was born

Don't give up though, you may be lucky, I have photos of some of my rellies who were born in the 1840's and 50's

depends whether they survived or not, a lot of my parents' photos were lost in a flood in the 80's

@Pat .. Yes I know the photo you are talking about but I have already got a copy of that. I was wondering if I could find more and more photos..

Correction @DF ... That photo does not have Robert Henry Shears (1878-1920) on there as it was taken after he died.

Don't give up searching. After nine years I finally found a distant second cousin who had a photograph of my mother and her mother. Mother was orphaned at the age of three and brought up by her father's brother families and was allowed no contact with her mother's family, and didn't even have a photo of her mother. But over 80 years later she received a nice framed photo of her and her mother as a present for Mothering Sunday !
