I have examples of both. No 1 from the 1800's has Smith on marriage cert, No 2 from the early 1900's has Jones on the cert. In both case they normally used the name Jones.

I think in my two cases, No 2's father was most probably Jones, whereas No 1 was probably not.

I have a third case of a man whose marriage is recorded with both names, Smith and Jones.....!

the cert I have is because the lady in question was born "Smith" her mother married "Jones" later and she was then known as Jones . Dont think it was an official name change tho ie not adopted or deeded

I don't think there is any simple answer, a lot depends on the circumstances and the date. In the past it was rarely necessary to provide any id so whatever was said was written down, in contrast to today when documentary proof is essential.

What is the reason behind asking the question. Are you able to provide some detail?

Presumably, if Miss Smith changed her name by deed poll to Brown, then married Jones ...............

If Miss Smith marries and becomes Mrs. Jones, then changes her name by deed poll to White, the name Jones ceases to exist. A child's birth certificate would not mention the name Jones.

A maiden surname is the surname a woman used at her first marriage.

So what are we talking about here - marriage annulment by deed poll?

Depends whether you tell the registrar of the name change. I have one cert where mmn is "Jones" formerly "smith"

Can anybody tell me if you changed your name by dead poll and then had a child would you have to put your original maiden name on a birth certificate in England.
