Thank you Shirley~i,m getting the hang of it and
Ann .
My F.I.L was irish he was from Ferry Bank Waterford .
and it was his dad that the disagreement started with .
My OH 's cousin says that he was an english man because he joined the army ( he was in the Royal Engineers) .
I have found a birth for him in Dungarvan . then i believe he moved to East Passage then to Ferry bank where my F.I.L was born .

My great uncle came over from Donegal at the age of 18yrs, specifically to enlist.
He signed with a Scottish regiment, but it was still the British Army.
He was awarded the MM and died in a POW camp at 21yrs of age.

My hubbies grandfather was born in Killarney southern Ireland and served in WW 1

There was a large amount of Irishmen in the British Army. In fact many were surprised as most of them had been fighting the English over Home Rule and a United Ireland. But come the outbreak of war all that ceased and they signed up in droves to fight.

Unless I am mistaken, there was (and is!) no such thing as the English Army - it's the British Army. The Irish Free State didn't exist till 1922. So I think the answer is yes!

Irish man living in Waterford Eire have joined the english Army in
in 1914 war . would anyone know .......
